1(original):

There is a huge problem in Vancouver with heroin addicts committing crimes to support their habits. The “free heroin for addicts” program is doing everything they can to stop the addicts. The problem is that there is a large crime rate due to the addicts. It is obvious that addicts have a hard time getting through their day to day lives. Daily activities such as jobs, interactions, and relationships are hard to maintain because of the fact that they are using. By heroin users being addicted, they will do whatever they have to do to get their hands on the drug. The types of crimes committed are those of breaking and entering as well as stealing. There are no limits to where they will go to retrieve this drug so that they can feed their addiction. The problem with this program is that it won’t help to ween these addicts off using heroin. It is only trying to save the city from rising crime rates that they’re up to. By providing the drug, these addicts will be off the streets, which in turn will prevent them from committing minor street crimes. This will also keep the heroin users out of the hospital. It is pointless that the hospitals have to deal with people that want to use bad drugs or unsanitary needles and find themselves being unable to afford hospital bills and find it hard to cope without the drug. This program gives people free heroin in the cleanest way possible. This will in turn fix the city  but not the addiction that these people face.

2(Mine):

To support their habits, heroin addicts are committing crimes leaving a dangerous problem in Vancouver. Despite efforts from the program “free heroin for addicts” to stop the problem the crime rate continuously increases. Without drugs, addicts struggle to complete daily activities like  jobs, interactions, and relationships because all they can think about is drugs. Addicts will go to great extent to achieve a high, including crimes such as breaking and entering, along with stealing. The problem is “Free heroin for addicts” does not keep addicts from using drugs. Instead the program focuses on decreasing the city’s crime rate. Providing heroin to addicts will lower hospital visits and keep addicts off the streets. Drugs coming from a controlled source is the cleanest way possible to prevent overdoses and criminal behavior. Effectively fixing the city but not the lifestyle of addiction.

Casual Rewrite-BigBabyBaller

Napping in infants and young children is very common cross-culturally, but by adulthood, cultural practices negatively influence napping behaviors and tend to look down upon the idea as a whole. When in reality studies show that napping in adulthood has the exact same benefits if not better than napping in childhood.

Napping has recently received increased attention because of its associations with health and its use as a tool to understand the function of sleep, with both areas of research showing positive effects on one’s well-being. In public health literature, some studies show that napping is associated with decreased mortality risk. Scientific evidence also shows that our brains benefit from a brief period of actual sleep (a nap), not just a quiet period, to recover from fatigue and to help restore alertness. Both short (15-30 minute) and long (1.5-hour) naps can increase alertness.

 Because the benefits of napping can play a big role in the psychology and emotional functions of life, it is important to learn more about this topic and the information it has to offer. In healthy populations, studies show perceptual learning , memory, creativity, and alertness  are directly related to the benefits napping provides. In addition, naps help promote homeostasis and recovery to immune functioning and other health risks as a result of sleep deprivation. Furthermore, people who nap for one hour or more daily, or nap due to excessive sleepiness, are likely psychologically, socially, and physiologically different from people who do not participate in napping at all. Thus, there may be differences in the health between individuals who nap voluntarily for relatively short periods of time versus individuals who do not nap at all.

Author Jay Summer explains how napping can be beneficial for the brain and body when used correctly. Summer explains in healthy circumstances where a person is regularly napping and not using the practice to cope with sleep loss or depression the benefits are substantial. Summer specifically explains how napping can increase functionality, performance, and memory especially in teenagers and students.

Naps can be particularly beneficial for students who struggle to get enough sleep and have to be alert at irregular times.A short daytime snooze may also boost workplace performance . A nap can improve cognitive functions such as memory , logical reasoning, and the ability to complete complex tasks.

Experts typically recommend that adults take naps eight or more hours before bedtime. For most people, that means napping no later than 3pm, napping too late in the day may contribute to nighttime sleep problems which could negatively affect the amount of rest you get and ultimately cause a downward spiral of mental illness. This is important because you want to make sure you are safely practicing your resting technique so you do not defeat the purpose of a good nap. A good resting environment is cool, quiet, and dark. Having a comfortable nap setting can help prevent unwanted interruptions or awakenings. Typically a bedroom is likely a good place for a short snooze since it is already set up to promote sleep. Adding blackout curtains or a white noise machine to block out distractions may help both at night and during daytime naps.

Author Afy Okaye goes more into depth about the numbers of society and napping today. Her studies tell us what percentages of adults and teens are actually using the benefits napping has to offer in their daily lives. The underwhelming numbers she found were very concerning, especially compared to the previous generation before us.

Cultural practices influence napping behaviors, with the frequency of napping at least once per week varying between 36% to 80% . Recent estimates indicate that 41%–74% of healthy American adults nap at least once per week.

What’s so shocking about how the western world views napping is how different it is from the rest of the world. In other countries it’s a custom to nap and is constantly sought out by the general public everyday. The Riposo, as it’s known in Italy, is a time for Italians to “retreat” from the hottest part of the day and rest. Similar to Spain’s siesta, the Riposo is a custom throughout Italy. Depending on your location, Riposo may take place anywhere from 1 pm to 5 pm. Many shops and stores will close during this time in order to enforce this rule. Shop owners and workers may go home, enjoy a delicious lunch, and savor time away from work. It’s a perfect time to settle in under a weighted blanket, close your eyes, and recharge for the remainder of the day.  In Frank Olito’s Insider article https://www.insider.com/sleeping-habits-from-around-the-world-2018-7 he states “Here in the United States, people typically go to sleep at night and wake up a little after sunrise. Some people take short naps throughout the day, while others stay awake until bedtime. While sleeping patterns vary from person to person, the act of sleeping is common amongst us all”. Thus proving the irregular sleeping habits across the globe and how we can learn from them.

In conclusion, these studies on napping raise exciting possibilities for future research, such as examining the stability and structure of reasons for napping throughout the lifespan, as well as the psychological, social, and health processes associated with napping behaviors. Understanding the reasons why people nap, as well as the correlates of these napping behaviors, can provide insights into normal and destructive nap behaviors in healthy and unhealthy populations. As research advances and the public becomes more aware of the benefits naps can have on the mind and body, hopefully we see this art being practiced regularly. Thanks to foreign countries like Italy and Spain we know that this idea is not so far fetched and with the power of knowledge a change can be made. As society becomes more fast paced due to technological advances and more cases of depression and anxiety arise it’s obvious that the well being of students and society will suffer. Maybe napping is the answer to these ongoing problems.

Opening 1:

What if I told you for the majority of your life you’ve been lied too. For generations doctors, parents, and teachers have been telling teenagers and young adults that at least 8 hours of sleep is needed in order to be fully energized for the next day, these are lies. In fact a person doesn’t need an extended sleep in their daily routine at all. Studies show that an effective 30 minute to an hour sleep periodically throughout the day gives a person more benefits that an 8 hour sleep would. Doctors say just taking short naps can help your health, provide more energy for your body, and increase your knowledge and memory.

Opening 2:

As children  it’s almost mandatory for infants and small children to take naps consistently throughout the day. The benefits of napping on children are extensively researched and encouraged by the general public, but as we grow up and get older we seem to start neglecting this art that is napping. The truth is when done correctly and regularly the benefits of napping are extremely beneficial for the mind and body, especially for teenagers and young adults who experience high amounts of stress in their daily lives. Napping is so important for a growing mind because it can help reduce stress/anxiety, slow down the pace of which one moves, and increase energy/ productivity.

Play Place :30 | Child Car Safety | Ad Council

0:00: To start the video we can see a person grabbing onto a knitted rope, because  of the protective foam boards and plastic overhang we can assume this person is in a playhouse. Qualities like large limbs, a full head of short curly hair, and earrings, suggest that the person climbing is an adult. Also visablue is the set of children’s legs that the adult is climbing over. The adult looks out of place already, climbing the opposite direction of children while expressing a look of distress.

0:01-0:02: As we transition to the next couple seconds into the video, it becomes more clear that we have an adult woman climbing through a children’s jungle gym. The woman’s distress is ovbiously visible now as she tightly clasps onto the rope while making her way over the children. Her motive is still unclear but we can tell that whatever she is chasing is very important to her especially because she is willing to take limbs to the face and climb through chaos to get there.

0:03: At this mark there is a cut scene to another angle of the jungle gym, where it appears the same adult woman is trying to climb up a blue, yello, and red slide as three children barrel down each lane. The woman is up in the air trying to avoid the children, showing how committed she is to get where she is going.

0:04-0:06: During this time we see that she is barely able to avoid a child, almost falling over. As the woman gains her balance she continues on her journey up the slide as if quitting is not an option. As the adults and children diverge in different directions we get this sense of emotional difference through the smiling of the joyful children and the dress of the overwhelmed woman.

0:06-0:09: This time marks another shift of scenery in the video. This time we are cut to a close up shot of the woman as she crawls through a narrow hallway. Right around the seven second mark, the woman is smacked in the face by a red swinging ball. This causes the womens eyes to roll to the back of her head which is a visual that shows she is frustrated with her situation. After this split second of frustation the woman continues forward in an army crawl although she is obviously uncomfortable.

0:09-0:12: The woman is again faced with another obstacle in the jungle gym which has the viewer really questioning her still unclear motive for continuing the journey. This time the woman  grasps onto a moving bar and swings her momentum forward. As she slides across the bar she looks to be in sheer panic, although clearly uncomfortable the woman surveys the passing children with determination almost like she is trying to find something.

0:12-0:14: The women’s obstacle is still yet to be complete as she begins to crawl through a plastic red tunnel on her hands and knees. Through the clear glass window as the woman passes we continue to see her discomfort as she picks her hand up and looks at it in disgust, indicating she had placed her hand in an unknown substance. By this time we should know the woman is determined to seek what she came all this way for so she continues through the tunnel, unfazed.

0:14-0:19: As the woman exits the red tunnel, she mussels her way through colorful foam pillars while carefully dodging children. She looks exhausted yet almost relieved   because she can feel her destination being reached. At the same time yellow text is slowly displayed across the screen which reads “If you love them enough to crawl into a playplace to get them to come down”. This confirms some of our previous suspicions.

0:19-0:24: After the text disappears we then finally see what the woman has been chasing this whole time. At the top of the play place is the woman’s daughter who makes direct eye contact with her mother almost as if she was waiting for her arrival. The little girl rests her head on the knitting and signs, almost as if she has given up on running and accepted her capture. The video freezes on this image as it displays one final message in the yellow text which reads “Then you’ll check NHTSA.gov/TheRightSeat”. This information allows us to understand the point of the message which is an advertisement for car seats and child safety.

0:24-37: During this time nothing but a blue back screen with a picture of a car seat and NHTSA.gov/TheRightSeat are displayed, this really lets the viewer digest what they have just seen while also displaying the owner of the advertisement and where you can visit more of their information online.
