Reflective – Oni

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

I demonstrated Core Value 1 best in my Definition Rewrite paper. I didn’t have a clear idea of exactly what I wanted to write until I had already written my first draft. Through my rewrite, I changed up the paper several times with the help of my Professor, the Rowan Writing Center, and peer reviews. I responded to all their feedback and fixed up my paper accordingly. Throughout the class, as my Professor gave writing advice with examples, I would return to my rewrite and apply his teachings to my writing. I had several conversations with friends about my topic, and together we explored the best way to get these ideas onto paper. The Rowan Writing Center was extremely helpful by getting fresh eyes on my work and pointing out flaws that would have gone otherwise unnoticed. I believe my Definition Rewrite is the best example of core value 1, since it was multi-staged process that continued to be revised all the way until the final.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

I demonstrated Core Value 2 best in my Rebuttal Rewrite paper. There are a lot of opinions out there on sexism in the sports world, but not a lot argue against it. It was essential to shift through the websites online in order to find the ones that were accurate and based on fact. It’s easy to throw buzzwords onto writing and claim it’s an argument, especially when it comes to a modern topic like feminism. I carefully analyzed what the authors of these sources were saying, and where they were getting the information from. I communicated their own ideas into my work attentively and purposefully, without misconstruing their words to support my argument. I compared all my sources in order to pick the strongest ones for my needs. Evaluating which sources fit the best for my Rebuttal Rewrite was the best example of Core Value 2 that I demonstrated.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

I demonstrated Core Value 3 best in my Casual Rewrite paper. The point of this paper was to analyze of Sports Uniforms came to be, and why they are the way that they are today. I explained the purpose of certain design choices, like the tightness and material, in order to make it clear how some choices in uniform have no bases except for sexism. The purpose of my writing was to lay out all of the reasonings behind the evolution of uniforms, in order to identify and isolate the factors that were rooted in sexist ideologies. I used visual arguments like pictures or regulations and team uniforms, and several other texts like books and articles. My rhetorical analysis of the history of sports uniforms in my casual rewrite best fits Core Value 3.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

I demonstrated Core Value 4 best in my Bibliography paper. My Bibliography is a collection of all the best sources I used, with paragraphs explaining how I used each in my paper. Each source was a little different, discussing topics in separate ways. I brought all these sources together, analyzed the different conversations that were happening, and applied each to my own writing. I chose which sources were more important than others based on the information they presented and the sources they had listed and used the ones that were the strongest. There are thousands of articles on my topic, but I narrowed it down to the ones that would benefit me the most, by identifying the best evidence. I met the academic expectations for documenting sources through my Bibliography, and this best demonstrated Core Value 4.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

I demonstrated Core Value 5 best in my Research paper. The topic of my paper is going up against a large piece of society as a whole, so I had to be careful to responsibly present my information. I tried my best to show that there isn’t an easy solution, and for women, it’s a lose-lose scenario. I acknowledged all of the voices I used in my paper, and didn’t try to take their words from them. I was firm in saying sports uniforms are sexist, but I didn’t dismiss all the arguments against me. I recognized the rule changes in the Olympics that allowed women to choose between bikinis and shorts, but I made it clear that there is still societal pressure for women to bear themselves in the media. I demonstrated the importance of my topic with statistics on eating disorders, and factual information. Using real life accounts as well, I expressed that sexism in the sports world has a real life impact, once that I am not exaggerating. My Research Paper best exemplified Core Value 5 by present all of my information responsibly and ethically.

This argument starts slow, picks up steam in 2 and 3, and brings home the goods in 5, when the accumulation of details finally lets us know what you’ve spent your semester researching and writing about. It’s the details, the process illustrations (the more specific the better) that make writing persuasive, Oni, as you know. Even this assignment, the most arbitrary and artificial of all formats, can provide the same thrills of understanding and insight that keep readers hooked to the last word.
