Wake Up

What does music look like?

“The Allegretto” from Beethoven’s 7th Symphony:

A Note about the Process.

  1. The purpose of assigning a Hypothesis very early in the semester was not to put you behind or thwart your progress, it was to get the ball rolling.
  2. You identified a topic. It wasn’t well-defined or as sharp as it would need to be to support an academic argument, but it was SOMETHING meaningful that prompted you to begin to explore source material.
  3. From here, the process is cumulative and flexible. Instead of wasting your time “brainstorming” about your vague notion, you start to read in your area of interest. From here, the process is cumulative and flexible. And repetitive. Instead of wasting your time “brainstorming” about your vague notion, you start to read in your area of interest. From here, the process is cumulative and flexible. And repetitive. Instead of wasting your time “brainstorming” about your vague notion, you start to read in your area of interest.
  4. AS YOU GATHER AND INVESTIGATE SOURCES, your vague notion begins to crystallize. You start to have ideas, find angles, develop theories, encounter surprising details you can’t wait to share!
  5. You gather the best of those sources into your White Paper and cluster them around WHATEVER HAPPENS TO BE YOUR BEST WORKING HYPOTHESIS.
  6. As the semester continues, you do more research, abandon early ideas, refine your thinking, place new sources into conversation with old sources, and DEVELOP A THESIS YOU CAN PROVE.
  7. AT NO POINT IN THE PROCESS is there a place where you can get stuck thinking, “I have to solve this problem before I can continue.” Moving forward is the solution.
  8. You write early drafts of short arguments along the way. First a Definition/Categorical argument. Then a Causal Argument. Finally, a Rebuttal argument, all based on your developing thesis.
  9. Each of these arguments can be revised as many times as you wish, always for grade improvement.
  10. Eventually, the entire project coalesces into a single 3000-word, well-researched, carefully argued Research Position Paper that proves a single thesis.

Late Assistance on the PTSD Claims

Sample Claims Analysis:
Consider these claims, some obvious, others hidden

When Caleb was finally screened for the severity of his TBI, Brannan says he got the second-worst score in the whole 18-county Gulf Coast VA system, which serves more than 50,000 veterans.

— “finally screened” means that according to Brannan or the author or both, Caleb should have been screened long before. It suggests that the VA was negligent in delaying his testing.
— “the severity of his TBI” clearly contains the claim that he in fact has some degree of TBI. The fact that he hadn’t until then been screened for it means nobody knew for sure that he did, but the author makes that claim.
— “Brannan says” means that the author has not independently verified Caleb’s score or where it ranked against all other screenings.
— “the second-worst score in the whole 18-county Gulf Coast VA system” is offered as Brannan’s claim that her husband is suffering more than almost anyone. Considering her vested interest in promoting this perspective, we have to be at least a little suspicious of the ranking.
— “which serves more than 50,000 veterans” gives the impression that Caleb was hurt worse than 50,000 other veterans. But let’s be clear. Many of these 50,000 will not have served in combat at all. Many will not have had active engagement with enemy troops on the battlefield. Many of those who did see active fighting will not have been near explosive devices. So we’re not comparing him to 50,000 TBI sufferers.

I’ve been very upfront about requiring you to respond to feedback, but disappointed that so few of you are taking me up on that offer (threat). Perhaps you’re not receiving Notifications when you get a Reply to your posts. Let’s spend one minute to review that process.

Early Warnings about Hypotheses

Most of us have now chatted about your hypotheses, so this little section is directed at students who haven’t conferenced. For them, I offer some warnings about common Hypothesis warning signs.

A COMMON PROFESSOR OBJECTION
Your proposal for a hypothesis is risky, MyStudent, because OVERLY POPULAR topics like the one you propose pose three very real problems:

1. WORNOUT TOPIC. The arguments about them are so completely exhausted there is very little new another paper can add to the discourse.
2. PLAGIARISM RISK. The ready availability of research papers for sale create a very tempting situation for students who feel pressured to finish something original at the end of the semester.
3. RISK OF FAILURE. More than one of my students have failed the course by borrowing heavily from papers on marijuana legalization, violent video games, an end to abortion, and the negative effects of social media on the mental health of youth.

F come see me

YOUR PROFESSOR’S GO-TO ADVICE
My approach to anyone interested in these broad topics is threefold.

1. I try strenuously to guide them away from the topic toward something fresh and untrodden.
2. If that fails, I help them craft a unique perspective on the topic that avoids most of what’s already been written and researched.
3. If that fails, I demand very strong, very early, and well-documented evidence of original research before the halfway point of the semester. Students who show they’re doing their own work before the end of the semester mitigate the appearance that they might be trying to copy their way to a finished product.
4. If those steps fail, so too, usually, does the student.

Long Table Read: “The Sentence”

Help is available from any number of free link-shortening sites such as bit.ly and 3.ly.

URL AFTER BITLY

Let’s practice.

  • Navigate to any website with a long url.
  • Copy the url onto your clipboard. OR copy the super-long url from the block above.
    • (Ctrl+C, or ⌘+C, or right-click plus Copy function)
  • Navigate to a link-shortening site.
    • bit.ly or 3.ly or tinyurl.com
    • bit.ly requires a free account
    • 3.ly and tinyurl.com will permit immediate shortening without an account
  • Paste your long url link into the provided url field.
  • Choose the “shorten link” command (language may vary).

Protocol/Mechanics

  • The Recent Comments section of the sidebar should look representative of the most interactive members of the class. Success in this course means engaging in the recursive process of writing (incorporating the ideas of others, synthesizing them with your own, sharing the results with the World Laboratory of Ideas, and suffering—I mean celebrating—the reactions of others, incorporating those new ideas, and so on).
Recursive, Cancel Culture
  • This sort of conversation should be happening in the feedback cycles for your White Paper.
  • When it does, your avatar will find a regular spot in the “Recent Comments” section of the blog, where it belongs as often as possible.
  • Do not wait for your Professor to initiate these dialogues.
  • However, in many cases, your Professor has already initiated these dialogues and is impatiently awaiting your engagement.

 🙂

  • When you feel lost, need clarification, want to bounce a new idea off of someone, need help finding a source (or knowing what terms to search for), drop a comment on your White Paper or on whichever of your posts is most appropriate.

Every highschool always had basic humanity types
The way we read text and music is left to right
The video shown was displaying music but it had 4 different parts of music playing and we watched each part do its own and how it contributed to the whole song.
The process is cumulative when it comes to the thesis and research
The zoom meeting I had with professor hodges helped me figure out a topic on my paper.
A dead end means you’re looking for something specific.
One sentence can have several different types of claims. If you read the sentence too quickly you will not catch it , but if you take time and analyze the sentence you will most likely find more than one claim.
Overly popular topics can lead to plagiarism which is not good
Oral vaccines do not require the person who is giving the vaccine to be a medical professional.
They are volunteers , and have a chance of getting shot by taliban if they are recognized.
The sidebar should be used more , by being interactive on the blog. This will also help one be successful in class.
Utilizing the resources Rowan offers like the writing center is good because it can improve your writing skills , and it’s nice to just have someone who can help you or look over your papers. It is also included in our tuition so it makes sense to utilize it.
The Westboro Baptist Church group has very hateful tactics.
Using a child to represent what an adult is thinking is cowardly to me because a child as young as the one in the picture does not understand what any of that means so why use them to get a point across. If you feel that way as an adult then you wear the shirt and hold the signs.
I know there is freedom of speech , but going to military funerals and portraying those hateful things about someone who has lost their life and has served the country is just wrong and should not be done.
    – To update that process , do not think about your topic but instead talk about it.

-Professor will be there to support you, but you must continue to search for sources and keep working on supporting whatever your hypothesis comes to be
-looking for whatever you can find, turns out to be the things that you can prove
-research with an open mind and be open to change if you find something that proves against your initial claims
-one word can completely change the meaning of your sentence or paragraph
-make it clear whether you are passing off the information or if you truly believe what is being stated

-Make sure to choose that articles open in a new tab so it is much easier for your readers
-if struggling, use writing center for resources and help with writing your papers
-looking for specific evidence proving your thesis simply proves information and assumptions that have already been proven
-you must write down all thoughts as they come and then go back and edit it

  3. njdevilsred17's avatar njdevilsred17 says:

The quote that is said by PJ O’Rourke about spending money like no tomorrow in my opinion is a little crazy because you got to remember that there are always times that you may need the money for something that happens unexpectedly.

After doing the white paper it is good to look back at the rabbit hole situation because it shows how to interpret how you should feel when researching for your hypothesis.

The process of the hypothesis and research is cumulative so you are able to change your mind. You should never find a dead end when searching to prove your hypothesis and also looking for an argument that goes against your hypothesis. I hope this doesn’t happen to me as I am liking the path that I am going on right now.

Many sentences may cause you to look a little deeper because a lot of sentences have more than one claim in each sentence. The ability to find the claims would also give the reader a better understanding of what the author is trying to share with the readers.

Some hypothesis topics are dangerous because they can be worn out, lead you to plagiarize, and increase your ability to fail. The best way to avoid that is by communicating with the professor about your hypothesis and your research process.

The best way to be successful in this course is by keeping in constant communication with the professor. The best way is by commenting back and forth with the professor to get a good understanding of what should be improved.

-Finding a new hypothesis during research is great news.
    -The process is cumulative.
    -Keep following leads.
-Dead ends are dead ends only when you stop looking.
-Some points in thesises are worth looking into. Vague language might change the impact of the author’s words.
    -worn out topics
    -plagiarism
    -too much borrowing
-the polio vaccine can be give using drops. Unfortunately, the taliban will shoot people who give the vaccine out.
-link shortners make internet links take up much less space.
-big links are distracting, and you want to keep your reader on your work.
-attaching a link to a title is another way to resolve this
-conversations are essential to smoothen out ideas.
-if you have something to say, say it early.
-Make relationships at the writing center
-Westboro Baptist Church desplays homophobic signs at military funerals using kids
-if you find a dead end, your search is too narrow

-echoing other people’s ideas is a failure.

Assigning a hypothesis so early helped to get the ball rolling for our papers.
Looking at where your sources got their information from can be beneficial to you to finding more information to prove your hypothesis.
Almost every adverb is an evaluation.
Overly popularized hypotheses come with a risk of plagiarism.
Which also makes a risk of failing.
Early drafts and early work makes it easier at the end to complete the research paper.
Trying to shove it into one day’s work is not beneficial to your grade or quality of work.
Linking a text to the title of an article looks better than pasting a big URL into your work.
Thesis should be narrow but not your research.
If you find a dead end in your research, your searches are too narrow.
Having a brief conversation about your struggles with research can expand your search bar to finding new sources.
Talk about your thesis with someone who cares (professor)

  8. – While researching initial ideas won’t end up as final ideas. Research topic and try to come up with unique results. Aversion therapy is fairly different but there might even be more bizarre ways to stop smoking. Smoking until you puke, eating cigarettes, or getting beaten up are good potential ideas.
    – Three ways that you can receive an F on the hypotheses. Worn-out topic, try not to have a basic and simple ideas to prove. do deeper research to find new interesting results. Aversion therapy seems ok for now for mine. Plagiarism, seems pretty straightforward, just don’t copy stuff you find on articles. I usually only like taking statistics from sources or basic ideas. Try to think of new and unique topics – will make it easier to research as well.
    – Try to have conversations/mini debates with the White Paper because it helps formulate ideas better and gives new perspectives on your claims. If you are stuck, hearing different opinions can give you new ideas on where to continue. Personally, I find stuff like this extremely helpful because I often get stuck while researching.
    – While looking into “username” and his research, a lot of helpful lessons arise. One is that don’t be too specific when asking questions and too fixated on looking for one answer. Keep questions broad so that you can gain a lot of different perspectives. Another is that Google Scholar and Campbell Library are very good search engines when finding new sources.

    – whatever happens to happen, is always good
    – those dead ends are always dead because you don’t find what you are looking for
    – “he got the second-worst score in the whole 18-county Gulf Coast VA system, which serves more than 50,000 veterans”
    – Caleb’s score was second worse out of 50,000 ?
    – Caleb should have been screened a long time ago
    – the fact that Caleb was not screened, means that no one knew the severity of his TBI
    – gives that impression that Caleb was hurt more than 50,000 other veterans
Worn out topic- this topic has been used so much, there is nothing new to say about them

During the wake-up section of the class, we watched a video of music. Music looks like a combination of motion and color that blends together with the sound of the music. A visual representation of music can vary by perspective and way of thinking about the beat and rhythm of the song playing.

During class, we went over the process of creating our three thousand word paper. We started off by getting the ball rolling by making sure we have a topic that is narrowed down and is discussed by having a discussion with Professor Hodges. There are different ways we can think about our topic by using resources to help us create a great hypothesis. With a good hypothesis, we can prove our thesis to be correct.

There are some hypotheses that are very risky, especially those who are overly popular that there is no new information to find about them. Make people agree with what you have to say. Make sure you are not causing plagiarism and make sure you create your own sentences with unique perspectives. Revise work to show improvement.

There was a picture shown of a child getting an oral vacation in India that really caught my eye. It was crazy to hear how 1 out of 3,000,000 children become paralyzed from the vaccine. Volunteers are used to giving children these vaccines even when they are not qualified and sometimes can be shot by the Taliban if there is a visual of them. This was just an interesting story to include in the lecture that really got me thinking how good things can be viewed negatively by anyone and cause the idea of hate to rise.

To shorten the links for our resources we can use 3.ly or tinyurl.com to do so in a quick manner. To cite our resources we have to write our title and right-click to press the link and make it link behind your title and select open in a new tab. The sources we use should not be narrow but rather a lot broader to keep our options the main focus. Apply what you have learned to your specific thesis used for your topic.

    My Notes;
The Process; As you gather your sources, you will begin to truly understand and crystallize your ideas. At no point will the process be a place here you get stuck thinking.
Claims Feedback; Some claims can be hidden within larger claims. These small claims can be as few as just two words.
Bit.ly and tinyurl; these websites just take very long URLs and make them shorter. I would assume this is for papers or sources so that they don’t take up too much space in a paper.
Research tips: talk about the thesis until you raise new questions in which you can search and find sources similar to those questions, maybe not the specific topic. Try different words similar for the databases to come up with new sources. Such as how Celebrity endorsements promote mass sales of the brand the celebrity endorsed, was able to be related back to the topic.

  13. Our Monday morning started with the calming classical music of Beethoven, and the representation of music through shapes and color. You were able to see how each different instrument compliments each other, and the complexity of that Beethoven piece. Discussing the process of our research paper. This is a big task, I never had to write such a big paper before. So it is always in my mind to think about this assignment and to not fall behind. But we have been going through a cumulative process. It is a flexible process though which is important to note. As my dad loves to say to me: fall down seven times, get up eight. On the same note of our papers hypotheses can be risky if they are a popular topic. We are on the hunt for new ideas, not worn out topics. It can also cause plagiarism, or failure. We need to drive ourselves into directions we never thought we would find ourselves. We began discussing how to create shorter links, instead of having gigantic links. By using a site such as tinyurl.com you can copy and paste them in and make them shorter. In order to succeed in this class being engaged is an important part, and having frequent conversations with our professor. Being an active member of this class will only benefit us in this class. Another benefit discussed in class today was the writing center here at Rowan University. By creating a relationship with a skilled writer can help in the long run, even for future years. Our lecture today also went through research tips, when we can not find anything. I was very relieved when I saw we would be discussing this topic today, because I too find myself not only in this class having difficulty finding sources. When searching for your thesis and do not find what you’re looking for, it may seem like you don’t know what to do next. But it is actually a good thing, because it is your original idea that you get to prove yourself. Then you can raise questions that can help support your original thesis. Search general, but apply it to your specific topic.

Every word in every sentence can be a claim. What provides value and what doesn’t is up for debate.
Shorten our hyperlinks, whether it’s bitly or behind a sentence. It’ll give our writing a much cleaner look. I have to do this for my own white paper.

    Research Tips
I’ve been using the Rowan Library to find all of my sources so far. There’s a wide collection of material.
One thing I should consider; has anyone actually written about my thesis, if not that’s great. I can be the first, if that’s the case, I may have to switch the focus of my research to help find supporting evidence that will strengthen my hypothesis.

By this point in the semester, we should have posted 6 assignments. We have to make sure to put our work in the category titled our username, or we may not get a grade on it. We should also put them under the category of the assignment title.
Our Claim Analysis assignment was due last night. We should have carefully examined each claim in the article and identified what type of claim they were.
Once, a student in this class plagiarized and was suspended. We have to make sure to only use our own work and cite properly. We should not borrow from other papers at all, but especially without credit.
Link-shortening sites make it so links are not super long. This may be useful if we need to paste a link, but it takes up a bunch of space on the page. Bitly is a good recommendation for this issue. You could also attach a link to text by highlighting it on your document and clicking the link icon.
We should have conversations with Professor Hodges in the reply section of our White Paper. We should initiate these dialogues by asking a question and placing the document in the “Feedback Please” section. This will allow us to be able to better debate our topic and specify what it is we are arguing. We can also go to the Writing Center for feedback on our papers. Appointments can be 30 to 60 minutes in person or online.
An example of somebody having a conversation about their topic would be the conversation “Username” had about their topic when they could not find any evidence to support it. They started to think of solutions by talking about their own views and connecting them to the topic. Then, they listed every way their topic could fail. They came to the conclusion that there are similar circumstances to the thing they were trying to describe, but not exactly like them. If we are not able to access an article because of its price, chances are it’s on the Rowan Campbell Library site and will be available to us by logging in.

    A Note About the Process
We started our hypothesis early in order to get the ball rolling and get things started
Your hypothesis should mean something to you
Instead of brainstorming, accumulate sources in order to shape your thinking
This process is cumulative and repetitive because you keep finding new sources and reshaping your thoughts
All your sources and information will be dumped onto the white paper
Your hypothesis becomes a thesis by the time you finish your paper
No place in the process are you supposed to get stuck
Along the way, we will be drafting a definition/categorical argument then a causal argument then a rebuttal argument all based on our developing thesis
Make sure to reply to feedback
Eventually your paper will become a 3000 word well-researched position paper that proves a single thesis

Make sure to categorize your posts

“The second-worst score in whole 18-county Gulf Coast VA system” is a numerical/quantitative claim

The hypothesis is no longer a hypothesis throughout the paper. It was only a hypothesis to get you started. Throughout the paper you have to treat the hypothesis as a theory

You have to actually convince the reader that you are right and that the reader is wrong.

When writing down that “somebody said” type of sentence, it is a sort of arms length type of claim where you haven’t verified if it is true or not but just stating that the person has said this claim

It is better to shorten your links with bit.ly instead of just letting the link go on for another page or 2

Don’t try to get in the way of your own language. Make your claim clear and just run with it/ get out of there.

Make sure that you aren’t just echoing somebody else’s thesis and actually make your
    own claim for your argument.

Make sure to use the Rowan Campbell library since you are paying for it for a reason. It is a good way to find articles and books to support your thesis.

  24. * The topic that we have been researching is cumulative and flexible, you can change it as you gain more sources because it changes your thinking
    * You shouldn’t get stuck. If you get stuck for any reason, abandon the idea, and find something else because you can waste weeks. If you can break through and find something worth talking about, then go with it
    * When writing the essay, there are three things we’re going to write: 1000 words on definition/categorical claim about something in your essay, 1000 words in a casual argument, and finally 1000 words on a rebuttal argument
    * Attributive claim is what authors use so they don’t take credit for the information ahead, while giving credit to the someone (In the case of the assignment, the author gives credit to Brannan)
    * DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. TAKE TIME TIME AND DO THE WORK. IF YOU USE ANOTHER SOURCE, GIVE THE CREDIT TO THE SOURCE. IT CAN LEAD TO YOU GETTING EXPELLED. DON’T DO IT
    * Bit.ly can shorten the URL that us being used. We don’t have to do that, but it’s good that we know about it
    * Feedback cycles are important for the white paper. They’re basically conversations with the professor that can help with feedback and edits and things of that nature. The purpose of creating a hypothesis early in the semester was to get the class thinking. The hypothesis should be something that we feel passionate about to help push us to explore sources. Some of our early ideas may have to be abandoned as we find new sources and information, but that is what is expected!
We will write short argument drafts based on the thesis we are developing. We will be expected to do a definition/categorical argument, a casual argument, and a rebuttal argument. All of these arguments can be compiled together into our 3,000 paper at the end to work towards proving our thesis.
In order to receive credit for our work, we must properly categorize our work so that Professor Hodges can easily access our work in a timely manner.
An attributive claim would be when an author states some else’s findings, such as Brannan says
If our sources for the research paper are too long, we can use Bitly to shorten the URL.
If you find others disagree with your hypothesis you need to be more specific and clear so that your hypothesis is direct and easily understood.
Utilizing sources such as the writing center will be helpful to receive feedback and guidance on your writing. They will help give you examples and guide you to the right path.
Finding sources to support our hypothesis is not going to be easy or straightforward. We may need to search for keywords that broadly relate to our topic in a way that we can use to compare to our topic. You may also need to rephrase your hypothesis to align with a topic that more sources are available on.
Many sources are available at our disposal, for free, on the Campbell Library website. If we find a source on Google Scholar that we must pay for, search for the title on the campbell library website and you will have access to the article because of the tuition we pay.

    – If you want to keep getting feedback back, you have to respond to the feedback given.
    – You have to make sure that your assertions are not vague and that you are saying your point as clearly as you can.
    – The Writing Center is a useful source to use as another way to get feedback on your work. They know how to make your paper better and provide a different point of view to view your paper.
    – Use Google Scholar and the Rowan Library databases as a way to find sources.
    – Sometimes the phrasing you use when looking for sources is off. You have to think more broadly and maybe consider topics that are not exactly what you are looking for, but somehow relate to your thesis. Find a point of view that coincides with what you are trying to say.
    – The library databases are a useful tool when an article you want to read is not free on Google Scholar.

  28. azntaco's avatar azntaco says:

A note about our research process. The purpose of assigning the hypothesis early was to get the ball rolling. We identified a topic, it might’ve not been well-defined as it should’ve been but it was something meaningful that prompted you to to explore the source material. As you start to investigate your sources, you start to have ideas, find angles, develop theories, etc. that you share through your White Paper. The hypothesis eventually becomes your thesis and nobody would know what your original was. In the future we will write 3 small short drafts; the definition/categorical, casaul, and rebuttal arguments all based on developing your thesis. The semester long project is a 3000 word essay that is well researched proving your single thesis.

The proposal for a hypothesis can be risky with three real problems. The wornout topic is when you make an argument that is overly used such as Legalizing Marijuanna. Also, that risks you of plagiarizing and failure because your going to have a very hard to from not borrowing information from others’ works. Which isn’t your original work or about your research.

A way to shorten the longer URL’s would be to use bitly. It organizes those long, clumsy citations into a neat short URL.

The Writing Center is a good way to improve your writing. It allows people to give to the rules and mistakes students would typically make with examples. They wouldn’t really proof read your final essay, but give you ideas that would better your writing so you can fix those mistakes yourself. Making connectins with people/going earlier in the semester would really benefit students mostly due to the fact that you would more likely get priority over students who are going at the last 2 weeks.

A research tip when you can’t find sources would be using Google Scholar or the best search engine for you. Instead of getting stuck at a pay wall using the Campbell Library might also benefit you. Not utilizing the Campbell library would be a waste of your tuition mainly due to the fact that you basically already paid for it. The search engine has thousands of peer reviewed articles that are fully reliable with information you might not have known you needed.

    Class Notes-

We started on our hypothesis right away to get the ball rolling. The quick start allows for our ideas to grow from something broad to something specific that we can argue. A key is to not use overworn ideas such as abortion, marijuana, etc..

Going forward we should read about out topic. It gets repetitive but we should be able to gather new ideas about our topic from scouring all of the different sources.

Our white paper can be sloppy but it should at least be somewhat organized. Eventually our hypothesis can becomes our thesis.

All three short 1,000 word essays are about our thesis. They are not independent essays about any topic. We will use these to build our final paper. We can revise and change those as many times as we want.

Reminder to put our posts in categories and our user name

    Claims Review-

“finally” is a claim. It can be an ethical claim because it should have happened earlier.

A claim like “Brannan says” creates distance from the speaker and the author. You don’t want to take credit for what follows or in some cases be connected to the idea.

“which serves more than 50,000 veterans” This claim is a hyperbole. Writing like this can help trick your reader. It makes you believe his TBI was the second worse out of 50,000 people but that is not the case. The VA just serves 50k people most of those people wont have TBI.

    Professor Objection-

Avoid overused topics. You run the risk of plagiarism by stealing ideas and words. The penalties are severe.

    Protocol/Mechanics-

We should shorten our long URL’s. It also to make your links open in a new tab.

https://tinyurl.com/app/ is the easiest one to use for this. Just copy and paste.

Vague assertions leave room for interpretation. Dialogue with the professor can help us narrow our ideas into something specific and eliminate this weakness.

Writing center can help us with our papers as well.

    Research Tips-

Having a dialogue and answering questions about your topic can lead to a new idea. Additionally, researching topics with a similar idea of argument may stem a new understanding to apply to your writing as well. EX used was about the west boro baptist church creating support for gay rights. Then the writer researched the way people will distance themselves from celebrity endorsers.

The research we find also has their own sources. They are great to use for our papers as well.

Claims can be obvious or hidden and sometimes a lot of thinking has to be done to find out what the author wants you to hear versus what they are actually saying.
Be aware of common topics so you don’t fall in the trap of working with worn out and overwritten material, it can lead easily to plagiarism, and therefore you can fail. So don’t do that.
Add Bibliography to the white paper along with summaries and links to sources
Good place to start a conversation with someone about paper is if the professor isn’t who you want to speak with. The writing center has resources and individuals that you can access.
Don’t make your thesis supporting the other side of your argument, use your sources to go toward your argument. Even if you can’t find a source that directly supports your view, try to think outside the box and refine your search engine.
If you need to gain access to a source try doing it through the Rowan University library website.
Make sure to keep in touch with your professor and consistently keeping up with adjusting your work.

  34. -Look to change or improve your hypothesis throughout the semester
-Make sure to publish your writing under your username in the categories
-When determining a claim, take time to look at the information and break it down
-If your topic is too broad or used too much, try to look for a topic that is newer and unexhausted
-Shorten your links using bitly, 3ly or tinyurl
-When given the opportunity while shortening your links, click open in new page
-The writing center is a great place to get help with your writing
-Get help earlier rather than later because they won’t have much openings toward the end of the semester
-The Westboro Baptist Church used very hateful tactics
-They would attend military funerals with hateful signs to show their cause
-Use the Campbell library to find sources that you are not able to access through google scholar etc.

  35. The purpose of assigning a Hypotheisis so early was to get the ball rolling
From here on, your white paper is cumulative and flexible
Do not waste your time brainstorming, you should start to read in the area of interest, goes on and on till paper is complete
Change your expectations and abandon on old ideas
At the end of the semester you no longer have hypothesis and instead have a thesis
There should be no point in the semester where you hit a “dead end”, find multiple detours that can get you around
The short papers will contrbute to your 3000 words research paper, they will all be on one topic that you picked
These arguments can be revised as many times as you wish, and will be regraded to improve your grade
Steer away from wornout topics, it has three major risks
Major plagiarism risk and risk of failure
Listen to professors recommendations that will steer you away from topics that have been thoroughly exhausted already by other students/ authors
Remember to you bit.ly to shorten URl, much more attractible in white paper
When professor leaves valuable feedback on your posts, make sure to comment back
This will allow for a conversation to get going and will greatly help your work
Utilize writing center, dont wait till the end of the semester. They are waiting to help you

Claims can really sneak in and I may want to edit my claims paper.
Use the writing center early on.
Get help early and rework papers over and over until they are the best way to say what you want to share.
Expand search terms to find what you’re looking for.
Generalize your hypothesis and you will find more to write about under a broader umberella.
Don’t look for exactly what you’re trying to prove.
Use the Library, it will have any academic journal I may need to write my paper.
I swear as soon as I start reading stuff I will actually enjoy it.

  37. 10/06
A note about the process: Identify a topic then fine tune it, have a conference with the professor about broadening the hypothesis, then find sources related to the topic you’re writing about. Instead of brainstorming, read in an area of interest. As you gather sources the reading should help you find details and observations. Short Papers contribute to your 3000 word paper.
Don’t choose a worn out topic for white paper to risk failure.
White Paper: 5 new sources. Link them to white paper. Sketch the bibliography data then purposefully summarize the source but that is useful. Use research tips like using the Rowan library or even google scholars. Use bitly to shorten source links.
Use the writing center as another source of help.

I never recommended “broadening” a topic. Most are too broad to begin with. But I did recommend rephrasing the search items to discover relevant evidence from unexpected allied fields of study. The WBC paper is still just as narrow as before the evidence from the marketing source.

The writing process is cumulative, flexible, and repetitive from now on. At the end of the semester a hypothesis should become a thesis, something provable with definitive conclusions. Short argument papers will all be connected to the main thesis paper.
Make sure posts are in the username category.
Don’t use a worn out topic.
Use link shorteners like bitly or put the link into the title for white paper sources.
Rowan university writing center can be used for essay help.
    Research Tips:
Edit search technique- If you are stuck, try talking about your idea. Relate ideas in topics to your message that can be used to support it, even if it is not the specific hypothesis you started with. Relate it to your idea after you’ve collected the evidence.
If you can’t get access from a google scholarly source, try to find it in the Rowan library database.

Hypothesis: Starting reading in my area of interest. Interact with sources and collect info. Follow where they lead you. Change your ideas as you go along, so that you have something new to report. Final paper will be 3000 words, well researched, and carefully argued proving a single thesis.
Claims: many are very hidden. They are hidden in words like “when”, and “says”.
They need to be specific; being the worst cause out of 50,000 veterans is a completely different story than being the worst out of 1,000.
Common Professor Objections: Workout Topic, the arguments are overdone and worn-out. Plagiarism risk, material isn’t original. Risk of Failure, you’d fail for just regurgitating already readily available information.
Go to advice: New and fresh topics. If not a new idea, a new angle on the topic. Show evidence of new research.
White Paper: 5 new sources, link to sources in the white paper. Sketch the bibliographic data, and purposeful summaries for new sources.
Sources: Shorten sources using Bitly. Don’t forget about writing center!
Comments: having a conversation is extremely helpful. Reply to his comments.
“Writing doesn’t care about grammar, its about having a brilliant idea and clear and brief delivery”
Not being able to find sources is a good thing, since it means you are the first to try and prove this specific thing. Finding someone who already proved your thesis isn’t a good thing, since it means you didn’t get to it first and have nothing left to say.
Find an idea that you can use to tie into your own hypothesis. For example, the Westboro Baptist Church and celebrity endorsements. It’s the same idea, that when celebrities endorse something, you want it less. When the WBC harps on something, we don’t want to be associated with them so we defend it. The product gets a popular endorsement just because of the celebrity. Its a completely different idea that we can heavily use to prove our hypothesis.
Talk about the topic enough to be able to branch off onto supporting ideas.

  41. The beethoven songs looked very repetitive
The purpose of doing hypothesis earlier on in the year was to get ideas to flow rather than just jumping into topic
Now that we have our topic already all that is left it to brainstorm and gather sources for our argument
Drafts are drafts, they are meant to be rewritten pieces of work
3000 word research paper is the end goal
    Continue getting feedback
Don’t pick and overly popular topic to discuss
Keep trying in the research process even if what you originally were looking for is not found
I like the example of the whte paper, helps me get and idea of what mine should look like
Links: when you get a link to source they are unusually long and annoying. You can use apps like bit.ly and 3.ly to shorten your citations to simple phrases that look visually more appealing.

Why we should never use Rhetorical Question, because the readers is already know what are you gonna say

As we gather sources into our white paper, they form around whatever happens to be your working hypothesis of their own volition. The solution to getting stuck in our thinking is just to move forward. We’ll write early drafts of short arguments that will eventually coalesce into our 3000 word research paper.

When the author preempts certain factual or evaluative claims with “Brannan says,” they are also making an attribution claim as they have not verified the information or claim to follow themselves. The difference between what the author has been told by others and what they have verified themselves is important to keep in mind.

We should try hard to avoid the more obvious, widely acknowledged opinions on the topic of our research.

Linking our sources with link shorteners such as tinyurl can often be a good idea. An alternative would be to create a hyperlink, but regardless it’s good to avoid inserting a long, jumbled link into our reference list.

We really should be asking for feedback frequently and responding to any and all of the comments we receive.

The Writing Center is a fantastic resource. It’s absolutely best to get help from them as early as possible and schedule an appointment. Later in the semester they will be bogged down in late or last minute appointments, whereas currently they do not actually have very much to do or many people asking them for help.

As stated time and time again, if finding sources becomes difficult then it might be time to take a step back and reflect on if and how we should shift directions based on what we have and haven’t gotten our hands on. However, this actually isn’t the only solution, because the problem actually may be with the finding as opposed to sources not existing. Improving our searching techniques, such as using Google Scholar or looking to disprove the opposite of our hypothesis instead of only proving our hypothesis. Just searching for something like “Westboro Baptist Church” is not necessarily the best way to seek out sources. The wording we need to enter into the places where we search might be something very different from what we expect. If an article is behind a paywall, we may be able to access it freely from the Campbell Library site.

Remember to use the references of your early sources to find more to add to your list! Wikipedia can be surprisingly useful for this purpose, almost like an alternative to Google Scholar or the library database.

  44. Class notes:

    – Instead of brainstorming, read about your subject of interest for the white paper.

    – For the non-portfolio papers, it’s better to receive feedback after your first attempt in order to see what can be fixed and what you dud well.

    – White paper claim: do not use a worn out topic, it gets tiring and it’s already been written on and it’s easy to plagiarize.

    – Good writing is not fancy and has many paragraphs, it demands a brilliant idea, clarification and a good structure.

    – Research tips: Don’t find someone who already proved your thesis, if you need help contact professor Hodges.

    – Short papers will contribute to the long paper.

-The process is flexible and cumulative.
-It is a good thought that you start reading the area of interest to make the process flexible and cumulative.
-Provide the response to the comments made by the professor on your post. Clarify what your point of view is.
    – Identifying claims from the sample claim analysis. ”Finally” is used as an Ethical claim. Ethical claims are evaluative.
    – Do not plagiarize by buying papers or copying from someone else. You may fall in risk and get terminated.
    – Use Bitly to make the link short for sources.
    – Work on white paper and find a good scholarly sources.

-As time goes on everyone’s white paper will continue to grow better and better
-Having our hypothesis assigned early was a way of starting from what you knew and progressing it as time continues to form into a great thesis
-Don’t think that this research paper should be a two day assignment right before it is due. Taking each day and giving a little towards the research paper everyday will not make it stressful and everyday you can think of something new to add or change. Just let it flow, give things a chance and don’t be afraid of it. Don’t get stuck on one part or finding one source you have to give your topic a chance to present itself to you, sometimes it doesn’t click right away.
-When you ask for feedback, be specific on what you want, don’t be afraid to ask and don’t be afraid with your work getting corrected. That’s the purpose of the feedback. If you want feedback be sure to respond to the feedback that you get.
-Be specific don’t hint around the idea, just state the idea no reason to sugar coat it because that is where the readers lose interest
-If you want multiple feedback be sure to use the resources here at Rowan. The writing center is a great place to perfect your paper or anything that has to do with writing
-Use google scholar when looking for sources. The sources are reliable and sometime you won’t find specific things that you want compared to regular google, but you have to find those ways to relate it to what you are stating
