Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

The work that I have done over the course of the semester has required a lot of attention. I’ve gotten all kinds of feedback from my professor and other peers alike while writing, and it has helped me develop my thoughts in a more concise sense. A good example of this would be my White Paper. The White Paper started with five sources that I used to create my hypothesis for the research paper. Over the last few weeks, I have added more sources while summarizing them all, shifted my hypothesis from one idea to another, and added potential small arguments that could help guide my research. The white paper helped me develop the different concepts that I planned to address in my paper.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

While doing my research, I’ve had to read different texts and analyze them to help my case. I feel like I have demonstrated this skill best in my Definition Argument. Though I’ve done this with all the arguments of my research essay, the definition argument has the most sources to support my argument. After I used the evidence, I explained it in a way that can help support the claims that I have made on my topic. All of the sources that I have used during this research process has aided me in the development with my hypothesis, research and claims in my research paper.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

My Causal Argument best fits this description. The Causal Argument is an argument in my research paper where I had to analyze the different causes of the topic that I was discussing. Considering that I was talking about video game addiction, with the evidence that I gathered, I addressed the different causes of video game addiction, which was and isn’t restricted to positive reinforcement, the euphoria that players get when they succeed and other things of that nature.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

The best example for this core value is my Visual Rhetoric. The Visual Rhetoric is an assignment where students had to analyze the different cinematic techniques and choices of the director of a 30-second commercial. Certain things about those commercials, like the camera panning from one side of the room to the other, or the lighting that the producer chose to use for the first few seconds is important to its overall purpose and the message that it is trying to convey to its audience. The expressions that the actors used, and their actions also contributed to the audience’s overall interpretation of the commercial. Every second of the commercial contains an argument of some kind. The students’ job is to evaluate said arguments.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

My work used different kinds of citations to reference someone else’s work and ideas. The best example of this is my Research Paper. The research paper is the completed product of all three arguments that I have submitted, those being the definition, causal, and rebuttal arguments. The research paper uses evidence to support the claims that I have written, with them being cited properly, and at the end of the research paper, there is a references section for the audience if they want to see any of the sources that I have used in my work.

  1. I would like to know if I did this right, or if I missed a few things and I need to add more.

You’ve done what you need to do here, Mercy.
If you have time to revise it, remember, it’s an argument like any other, and the better the evidence you provide, the more persuasive it will be. Specific details go a long way to convincing readers that you have “the goods.” With that in mind, compare your answers to Core Values 2 and 3. One named the specifics of your work. The other could be dropped into anybody else’s Reflective Statement and be just as accurate. You want to personalize your argument since it’s about YOUR work.
