1. Working Hypothesis 1
Although getting enough sleep in your life is always good, getting even a little bit over of how much you’re supposed to be getting could cause negative impact to your mental state.
1b. Working Hypothesis 2
People who sleep former time than they should or people who “oversleep” are more likely to have a short-lived life.
2. Five Academic Sources
I find it counterintuitive that something that everybody likes to do could have negative consequences if you have too much of it. There is a goldilocks rule that has been into effect whenever the subject is about sleeping. Too much and too little could and would likely lead to poor health management. It could even put you in risk of many health conditions that could include diabetes, obesity, and even depression. This is what is called a U-shaped relationship between long terms of sleep and poor health. A study that was done in Australia would depict how people 45 years and older would have an “overall poor health status.” After having to reach their hypothesis, they predicted that no matter what changes, a long amount of sleep duration will always be associated with lower health.
I find it counterintuitive that an activity where you are quite literally not doing anything at all would eventually lead to a result of weight gain and obesity. “Cross-sectional studies” have made studies that have reported that long amounts of sleep does in fact lead to an overall higher body mass index. It is even stated that continuous nights of long amounts of sleep could increase obesity to up to 193%. That’s more than certain that you will gain a decent amount of weight when continuing to sleep for a long amount of time for several nights. In a “Canadian Quebec Family study”, a sample of 200+ people (all young adults) took tests and the long-duration sleepers were compared to the average-duration sleepers. The tests would come back and show that the long-duration sleepers gained an estimated 1.58 kg than the average-duration sleepers over a 6 year stretch. It does seem like a sort of reach, but it does still show how much weight can be gained from oversleeping
I find it counterintuitive that you can be put at a greater risk of death while doing a lot of something that is natural for every living species on the planet. There is epidemiological data that points towards negative effects towards people who continue to sleep for more than 10 hours a night. These negative effects even include a greater risk of death. There will always be people that continue to ask how many and what are the negative effects of sleeping too much or too little. This is always fine since it is good to always be taking good care of your health before it is too late and you can’t do anything about it to fix it later on in life. Some of these people that wanted to know would go on to do some more tests towards a study. The study would have 28 patients targeted to sleep for 14 hours or more. These 28 patients were then resulted to increased levels of being tired or being sleepy. They would eventually have to take melatonins to actually let them get a good sleep in.
I find it counterintuitive that doing a lot of something that you would used to think is good for you, can lead up to many more problems. Sleep problems could be generated from the simple fact that if you are getting too many hours of sleep. Although it is true that there are less problems when sleeping for a large amount of time instead of a shorter amount of time. the frank of the matter is that it is still leading up to problems regardless. To compare large amounts of sleep with short amounts of sleep, researchers in San Diego came up with a study where they would ask different people how much sleep they would clock in a night and how would it affect their activities. The results that came back weren’t too surprising. It was then stated that the people who would sleep for large amounts of time and the people who slept for only a little amount of time would both have an increased amount of sleep complaints than the people who would sleep “just right”.
I find it counterintuitive that you have to be extremely careful and make sure you aren’t overdoing or undergoing something that is natural to living a healthy life. To live a better and healthier lifestyle, getting just the right amount of sleep is critical to living that healthy lifestyle. It is critical for the reason that it could lead to many problems in your life if you don’t get that right amount of sleep. These problems damage a man’s life in particular with the reason being that it could lead to erectile dysfunction and lower urinary tract symptoms. It causes an increased risk in infertility if you are consistently getting over or under the right amount of sleep you are supposed to be getting per night. Overall, a majority of men continue to not get the right amount of sleep and it does lead to consequences on their wellbeing. It is healthier to make sure you are not sleeping too much or too little.
3. Topics for Smaller Paper
- (Counter Argument) Getting enough sleep and a little over the average amount will leave you feeling refreshed. This will continue to leave you to make better decisions and an overall better life.
- (Cause and Effect) Getting too much sleep causes making worse decisions for your life
4. Current State of my Research
I believe that my current state of research is in a good spot as of right now. I like all of my sources and how much information they give me so it is a lot to go off of. There is always room for improvement so I’m not gonna simply say that my research is perfect but it is at least where I wanted it to be when I started searching. I did actually have to look thoroughly through the articles because most of them would go on to talk about how only a little bit of sleep is damaging and not researching if a lot of sleep is damaging. Other than that, I like where I am at with my research.
Can I rephrase your Hypotheses?
1. Working Hypothesis 1
Any sleep that exceeds “optimal sleep time” is dangerous to our mental health.
1b. Working Hypothesis 2
“Oversleep” shortens human life.
