My Hypothesis- gymrat230

  1. PEDs(Performance Enhancing Drugs) In Baseball
  2. PEDs and performance in baseball
  3. The effect that PEDs have on the performance of a player and the team in the MLB.
  4. MLB players who took PEDs had a significant uptick in stats such as batting average, hits, home runs, and runs batted in.
  5. MLB players who took PEDs had a significant uptick in statistics such as batting average, hits, and runs batted in, but their enhanced performance had no effect on whether or not their team had a successful season.
  6. All MLB players should be allowed to take PEDs with no consequences as their enhanced performance has no correlation to whether or not their team wins a World Series, wins their division, or even makes the playoffs.

  2. PEDs and performance in baseball
  3. The effect that PEds have on the performance of a player and the team in the MLB.
  4. MLB players who took PEDs had a significant uptick in statistics such as Batting Average, hits, and runs batted in.
  5. The enhanced performance gained by players taking PEDs gave their respective teams an unfair advantage, which led to the team winning more games and making the playoffs more often than not.
  6. The best way to stop players from taking PEDs would be to let one player from each team take PEDs.
  7. If the MLB allows one player from each team to take PEDs will even the playing field when it comes to the use of banned substances, thus making the game solely about the skill and chemistry of the team.

I like the idea, Gymrat, but I don’t get your logic.

Read 4 and 5 together and tell me how they can both be true.

Also, maybe you’re using “won the World Series” as the only metric by which to measure team success, or maybe you’re not. I can’t tell.

I’d like to see a robust defense of the counterintuitive thesis that baseball, the players, the teams, the sport, and society in general would all be immeasurably improved if everyone who wanted to do so could take whatever drugs they wanted to take without fear of breaking the rules of the game. Or some flavor of that. But you don’t seem to be going quite there. Let’s tinker until we get something clearer to chase down the rabbit hole.

    Mandatory Conferences

I was happy to see you consider a radical defense of PEDs in baseball, gymrat, and willing to let you switch to a new topic, but you’ll have to schedule another Hypothesis Conference to discuss this one. I’m not much interested in a “list of benefits” essay. They always read like a cheesy blogpost “Top 10 reasons to love fatty acids!”

It’s quite peculiar to consider nicotine a cure for smoking, don’t you think? It’s the addictive element that hooks smokers on smoking in the first place. The delivery device, not the narcotic, is the switch here. Nicotine addicts remain addicted to nicotine. Is that the angle you’re working? “The Patch” as a “harm reduction” tool that doesn’t cure the addiction but eliminates the associated risks of cigarette smoke?

That’s fantastically counterintuitive and highly unlikely ever to be adopted, gymrat, but that doesn’t disqualify it from being a valuable hypothesis to test. Is there any way to use the odd analogy of the NFL’s “franchise tag” to this proposal? NFL teams can skirt some unwelcome salary issues by slapping the franchise tag on one player per team per season. That might be the end of the similarities list, but it’s worth mentioning.

    Two things for future reference:
    1. You don’t need to add new material to an existing post. WordPress saves all versions, so you can obliterate or largely replace your original material and click Update. You and I can both see the original(s) in Edit if we ever need to compare them.
    2. When posting to the Feedback Please category, drop a Reply declaring what sort of changes you’ve made or what sort of advice you seek. Those requests automatically rise to the top of the FP queue.
