Professor David Hodges
davidbdale
What should I call you? I prefer David or Dave, but students uncomfortable with first names can call me Professor or Mister Hodges. My ESL students' charming solution, "Mister David" is my favorite by far.

I love this idea. I agree that growing up, I related to spider-man and never really thought about why. It would be interesting to see others research on this topic.
Spiderman is my favorite superhero. I’m intrigued to see how you develop your argument as to why Spiderman is the most influential superhero.
This should be fun, ES. Even casual observers of comics know and love Spider-Man, so I won’t have to study too hard to have at least something to contribute to the conversation.
I do have quibbles with your first draft here. It doesn’t grow from general to specific in any discernible way. “Relevant” and “Affects Society” combined result in “Influential,” so I’m with you there. Great, and Most Important, and Kids Relate, you could have skipped.
Let’s reset the table here, if you’re willing.
1. Since his creation, Spider-Man has been a character of enduring interest.
2. Because he is a vulnerable teenager, Spider-Man remains a superhero of enduring interest.
3. Because he is a vulnerable teenager who must keep his superhero identity secret, Spider-Man remains a character of enduring interest.
If something along those lines is what you had in mind, I’ll be very happy to continue to contribute to the development of your hypothesis. But even if you don’t like the path I’ve outlined, you’ll need to revise your own 6 steps until they approximate this level of specificity. What do you think?
Like all feedback, this is meant to begin a conversation, ES.
I am eager to hear your reply.
What I want to explore is his importance in the context of EVERY fictional character. Every age can relate and In a dark world, you too can see yourself being him. His vulnerability and relatability makes him the most important character in modern history. I want to stay along these lines but I think seeing how others articulate their love and admiration will put it in better context for me. Since I am looking at how people think of him, maybe the easiest and most authentic way to articulate the hypothesis is to see how others describe his importance to themselves?
Curious to hear anyone’s thoughts.
I appreciate that you’re inviting individuals to express their appreciations, ExactlySimilar (or would you rather be addressed as BullyMaguire?), and I think a really nice feature of a paper might be to stud it with callout quotes from fans at strategic points in your presentation.
Meanwhile . . . as you’re conducting your first-hand survey of fan appreciations, you’ll need to be doing some scholarly research as well to meet the department requirements for an academic paper.
A very quick query of Google Scholar yielded 3000 hits for the generic search [“peter parker” “spider man”]
Here’s the url: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C31&q=%22peter+parker%22+%22spider+man%22&btnG=
And here are some sample titles:
—Playing Peter Parker Spider-Man and Superhero Film Performance
—Spider-Man: superhero in the liberal tradition
—SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS ON PETER PARKER AND SPIDERMAN IN THE FILM OF SPIDER-MAN 1 (2002)
—The Marvel Comics Group’s Spider-Man is an Existentialist Super-Hero: or” Life Has No Meaning Without My Latest Marvels!”
—Fear of a black Spider-Man: racebending and the colour-line in superhero (re) casting
Start reading before you get too far into your own thinking, ES. Remain open to surprise. Follow leads where they lead. Hope to come back with a pheasant from your fox hunt.
Your reactions, please.
I’ve been doing research for this unintentionally since 2004. The problem that I’m definitely going into is not typing 350,000 words. I have a lot of ideas and know a lot about it. I know how he affects me and I know that many people feel the same. I think that the way I’d like to head is his impact in relation to any other character from media. For example, comparing him against someone like Superman or a Luke Skywalker type. I want this to be more of a comparison, both in society and in financial regards. I’m going to use the character as a fixed point and analyze what he has done and what makes him the most important/influential modern fictional character. I’d just like to know if this makes sense because I see it all mapped out in my head.
