My Hypothesis – whimsicalwanda

Social Media Should be Put to an End.

  1. Social media
  2. Social media takes up too much of peoples’ time (especially teens)
  3. The cons of social media outweighs the pros
  4. Social media can have negative effects on a person’s life
  5. Social media can effect the health of a persons’ life
  6. Social media can encourage bullying, which can lead to anxiety and or depression
  7. Limiting/Eliminating social media use leaves more room/time to do alternative things that can promote a healthy lifestyle. (Ex. work, exercise, enjoy the outdoors, hang with friends/families, and or etc.)

I’m the only person I know that is not consumed by Instagram, Snapchat, Tiktok, etc… I’m interested in seeing how you will develop your argument.

We’re all looking forward to your research, whimsical. (I will probably just as often call you wanda.)

Personally, I’m in favor of a VERY straightforward, bold, categorical claim like: Ban it. or Burn it. or Mandate it. And you may very well want to pursue your argument exactly that dramatically.

But just as likely, you’re going to recognize that lots of people are just as consumed by lots of other things (both positive and negative) that, to YOUR way of thinking, or MY way of thinking, take up TOO MUCH of their time. As if somebody asked us to arbitrate.

I hope you’ll be strict with yourself, carve out a narrow aspect of the problem to explore in depth, and judiciously consider the actual evidence, not just accept tropes and “common knowledge.” You’ll have to prove that to me early and stick with a plan. I’ve routinely denied permission to lots of students who have come to me with a “Social Media are dangerous” hypotheses. It’s already been the subject of thousands of student papers.

Like all feedback, this is meant to begin a conversation, wanda.
I am eager to hear your reply.

    No Reply, wanda?
I’m disappointed. I gave you class time to respond!

I think social media can be a tricky topic to work with. There was a point when my hypothesis was “social media should be banned”, but I thought that was a little too bold. Although I guess not because I want people to be sure what my argument is. So I will try my best to stay specific to a certain aspect of social media. Thank you for your feedback and I apologize for the late response.

I do love the boldness of the “ban,” Wanda. You should know that China (where the government can really push people around) has a new law strictly limiting the amount of time young people can spend online gaming every week. For real. It’s a hard sell to freedom-loving Americans, but you should start your research with a real-life example of a jurisdiction that doesn’t just fret about the problems of social media, they’re willing to DO something about it! 🙂

I did a Google Scholar search for [china youth gaming addiction] and got MANY thousands of hits. Also, look how clever Google recommends other search strings you might use to expand your reach! 🙂

        Your thoughts?

Yes, I definely think it is harder to convince people in America of something, especially since there are so many different viewpoints that vary from person to person. It would very difficult for all Americans to come to an agreement. I first thought of the covid vaccine as an example. Thank you for your feedback. I will attempt to look into the law in China.
