My Hypothesis-Bubbarowan96

The NFL Should Change Their Overtime Rules

  1. Overtime rules in the NFL
  2. Overtime rules changes the outcome of a game
  3. The current overtime rules cause chaos at the end of a game
  4. Making a new overtime rule would make the league better and have equal odds to win
  5. Changing the overtime rules in the NFL would basically get rid of the unfairness the league has had for years.
  6. Changing overtime rules in the NFL would help give both teams a fair chance to score and to make the game more interesting.

Bubba, I’m happy to entertain this research proposal provided you can convince me it will benefit from RESEARCH. At the moment, it sounds more like an opinion piece, the sort of thing you might dispute with others at a fansite. I’m a big fan of arguments between passionate advocates, but not such a big fan of arguments of the “it seems to me” variety.

So, let’s talk about how this is a research project.

Begin by being more specific about 1) your objections to the current system and, 2) your recommendations for change. At the moment, you’re proposing, “changing overtime rules,” which is, as you will agree, hopelessly vague.

I know you object to a team “never getting the ball in overtime.” You’re probably also not a fan of the coin-toss method of deciding who DOES get the ball (or the choice of whether to kick off or receive). What are the numbers on who is favored? Is it overwhelmingly the team that wins the toss?

How about a rule that says, “whichever team had the ball at the end of regulation has to kick off”?

Like all feedback, this is meant to begin a conversation, Bubba.
I am eager to hear your reply.

The numbers are 50/50 but I don’t agree with those odds because any team can get the ball and win the game. In my opinion it is overwhelmingly the team that wins the toss because they get the chance to win the game and not have the other team have a chance to come back.

I’m unsure how you can know the numbers but “not agree” with them, Bubba.

Of course it’s “possible” that the team that wins the toss will score a TD on the first possession, but if it doesn’t happen more than 50/50, where’s the harm? When regulation ended, the teams were knotted at 50-50. An “even odds” outcome seems completely fair.
