A Woman’s Body
Men: You May Never Be In A Woman’s Body, But This Film Puts You There For 65 Seconds
- This video was shot from the point of the view of the person holding the camera
- The camera cuts from scene to scene very quickly.
- She is holding out her wrist to check the time as a taxi cab pulls up
- The driver is looking at the road and adjusting the mirror. In the mirror, we see the women’s outfit and her chest is showing a little.
- The driver then adjusts the mirror so that he could get a better look at her body.
- Uncomfortable, the woman covers up herself by closing her jacket and using her hair to cover up the remainder of the skin showing.
- Three boys, they look like teenagers approach the young lady and begin to harass her.
- One of the boys seem to be tugging at her clothing and they follow her for a little as she walks.
- In the next scene, the woman gets inside a van filled with men and I think there might be two other women at the most.
- The tone of the music changes to a darker one.
- While she is handing a man cash, the man next to her in the red rests his hand on her thigh.
- Angered, she cries out and smacks the man in red across the face.
- The men in the van do not seem to be taking her yelling and screaming seriously as they do not slow down the van much.
- I don’t understand what language she is speaking but it looks like she is yelling either at the people in the front or the driver to let her out of the van immediately.
- The scene suddenly cuts and it is dark outside and adult males approach the women.
- They begin to attack her and the she tries to hit the man with the cigarette but he holds her arm.
- They throw her to the ground and it looks like either they’re trying to rob her or rape her or both. Her bracelet breaks in the process.
- Throughout the video when the woman is walking, her head is facing down as if she is trying to avoid confrontation with anybody.
- The only time she looks up for the ground, is when she was being approached. She was only approached by men only and the second she looked up, bad things happend to her.
- “When you start your day are you concerned about your safety?” The woman has had at least three confrontations, all with men. It was a repetative routine of them approaching her, talking to her inappropriately and them somehow assaulting her.
- “Do you worry about what ride you take? And where to walk?” After the woman comes home she has a defeated look on her face. She looks in the mirror as if she’s questioning what did she ever do to get the disrespect she receives.
- It seems as though no matter how much she tries to cover herself up to avoid being harassed, nothing seems to work. The men she comes in contact with constantly shame her for being a female.
- She is one girl who was made to represent the mistreatment of all girls in Egypt.
- This video did over exaggerate violence that women in Egypt face everyday. I’m not saying that these acts of violence against women do not happen often, I just don’t think that it happens to the same person as frequently as it happened to the young woman in the video.
- This is an ad for Safe Cities Free from Sexual Violence against Women and Girls in Egypt.

OK, Amanda. Considering the lateness, I’ll be brief, but I will give you some indications how you’ve done.
This is passing work, but you could do a lot to improve it, Amanda. Except for the initial mention of the POV camera work, you haven’t mentioned any details about the visual rhetoric. You tell a story of what we see, but the same story could be told in language. Why does the ad work as a visual argument, or how does it fail as an argument? What is the purpose of the point of view? Do we get a sense of claustrophobia in that van? How is that feeling accomplished? Why is the camera work so jerky and the cuts so quick? What is significant about the fact that the van doesn’t appear to be slowing down when the door is opened? What’s the overall comfort level of the piece? Why are there so many women shown at home at the end? How do you react to the casting?
These are questions that pertain to the visuals. Consider them important components of the assignment.
