Proposal 5 Sources—Amanda Smith

The topic I chose for my research paper is feminism and the media. Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. When hearing about women fighting for equality amongst men, women are often portrayed as being very radical and against all actions that men in general do. But those are the type of feminist who seem to make headlines which does give feminist a bad name because their are may different types of feminist in the world. Now more recently we have celebrities and people of influence defining themselves as feminist which also adds to one’s interpretation of feminism. My thesis is that not only does the media shape our schema of feminism which is different than what it actually is.

Beyoncé and the Oversimplification of Women Through Beauty

Background: Beyonce Knowles is oversimplifying feminism. Beyonce has often stated that she is a feminist and while the author isn’t arguing against that, he explains how her own actions are countering those statements.

How I intend to use it: I would use this source to explain how Beyonce is sexualizing feminism and how her views of feminisms counters her actions.

Modern Feminism: The Role of Women in Music

Background:  women in music are portrayed as modern feminists and how that affects the changing views of feminism

How I intend to use it: I plan to use this article to show women in pop culture. This article is biased to one side the argument to say that women today in the media are giving adding to the positivity of feminism.

Beyoncé’s New Album Is Not As Feminist As the Media Is Making It Out to Be

Background: Simular to the previous article about Beyonce’s feminist actions, this author however focuses more on the actual content recently released visual album. This article discusses how the lyrics, music videos and how

How I intend to use it: I plan to use to source to explain how Beyonce may not be as big of a feminist as we think/what she makes us think we are

What is Feminism

Background: An explanation of how feminism is defined and the history behind the movement. The history of feminism and how it came to premise(proper word?)

How I intend to use it: I plan to use this source as a why to interpret feminism to my understanding.

Post‐feminism and popular culture

Background: the correlation between feminism and the media. It explains the media’s affect on how what we think feminism is and the consequences of that. It  THe National Organization for Women (NOW) is a huge topic in this source

How I intend to use it: This article argues that women today are giving feminism a bad name. it counters the previous article by giving reasons why Feminism continues to get a bad rep.

Hey, Amanda. I’m looking forward to this. I didn’t learn much about your topic from the Definition essay. I trust this will tell me your plan.

It’s OK to have a “topic” for a research paper, but many weeks ago you ought to have formed a preliminary thesis to research. Without a thesis to test against the evidence, research can quickly become an unfocused fishing expedition. You might end up with a boat full of fish, but you should probably throw back everything except the trout . . . or the bluefish . . . or whatever flavor you’ve brought the bait to catch.

Your thesis, as far as I understand it, is that feminism is not what we think it is. That’s pretty vague. I don’t know what you think it is, and I don’t know what you think I think it is. I hope you’ll tell me soon.

    1. Beyonce. This is classic “talks about” language, Amanda. We don’t get a single specific claim here (I’ve written about this in several professor posts: purposeful essay, model proposals with sources, etc.). Beyonce may “counter” a classic definition of feminism, but I can’t tell that from your notes.

    2. No idea what the value of this might be.

    3. Stil not the slightest bit clear on what feminism is, what might and might not classify Beyonce as a feminist, or whether the “content” of the new album supports a claim that she’s a feminist. (I also can’t tell whether Beyonce herself claims to be a feminist, or whether others make that claim for her.)

4, Is this the wikipedia entry you used in your Definition essay? It wasn’t very useful there. I see now it’s a book. Have you bought, ordered, or read it? How do you plan to access it? I see that it contains an excellent bibliography you might find useful.

    5. This looks useful. Article? it appears to me to be a book. Can you find me a sample quote that demonstrates what you say is the value of the book for you? I can’t tell much from your description here.

    Grade recorded.
The only way to improve this, and you must, is when you expand it into your Annotated Bibliography in your Portfolio. I recommend you read the Model Bibliography entry first.

On the grade report sheet you said that I didn’t do the assignment but you said on here that you gave me a grade.

Thank you for the clarification, Amanda. I did grade this assignment but neglected to update report sheet. —DSH
