For this Research I will explore the strategies individuals uses to make both effective and complex decisions.   Also I will discusses the different  impacts and  factors that can affect their decisions making. [Neither exploration nor discussion counts as a claim, Lashawn. What’s your thesis as you begin your research? There’s no point starting without one.]

Background – In the Article “A counter – intuitive approach to making complex decisions”, author and social psychologist Maarten Bos and Amy Cuddy discuses whether or not “sleeping on it” helps individuals make the appropriate decision.  [This fails to tell us what we need to know: what conclusion do they draw?] Mr. Bos and Mrs. Cuddy talks about  leaders  such as Barack Obama who had slept before making decisions which could impact people lives. And how doing so had  helped them make the best possible decision. [Skip the talks about language and tell us that Obama benefited from sleeping on his decision.] l the For example when President Barack Obama faces a decision whether or not to authorize the raid to kill Osama bin Liden he sleep on his decision. [Does the fact that he gave that decision some time improve the quality of his choice? Who decides whether he made the right choice? If the mission had failed, would his choice have been a bad one that sleeping on the decision helped him make? Was killing an American citizen on foreign soil who posed no imminent threat actually a good decision?]

How I intend to use-  Maaten Bos and Amy Cuddy believe ” sleeping on it was the scientifically sound decision for Obama and is the right course of action for anyone facing a challenging quandary”. [That’s a clear claim of theirs that belongs in your Background section.] They also suggest” during periods when the mind is “distracted” or not consciously focused on an issue there is an active process that accurately weights the pros and cons of relevant decision attributes”. [That’s another clear claim that belongs in the Background.] Both Mr. Bos and Mrs. Cuddy recommend when making complex decisions you should talk in all the information , sleep on it and check the facts.[Again, their claim, background.] [I don’t see anything here that qualifies as “How I Intend to Use It.”]  http://blogs.hbr.org/2011/05/a-counter-intuitive-approach-t/

Are complex decisions better left to the unconscious? Further failed replications of the deliberation without attention effect.

Background –  Authors Dustin P. Calvillo and Alan Penaloza suggest “the deliberation without attention effect occurs when better decisions are made when people experience a period of distraction before a decision than when people experience a period of distraction before a decisions immediately or when they send time reflecting or the alternative”. They also conducted several experiments which shows people does not make better decisions after unconscious thoughts. [If I’m reading this right, and I admit it’s hard to be sure, their claims sound completely contradictory.]

How I intend to use- I intend to use this has a prime example why waiting to make a decision does not necessarily mean an individual will make a  better decision. [I don’t know what your thesis is, but what you say here clearly contradicts Bos and Cuddy. What you can’t do in your essay is offer a sampling of several contradictory opinions AS AN ESSAY, Lashawn. You need to decide what you believe and persuade others to adopt your position.]

“The science of decision making”

Background-  Author Nancy Murphy talks about the different strategies an individuals uses when making complex decisions. Also how psychologist examines the latest research in neuroscience, behavioral, engineering and economic helps stimulates our brain during decision making.

How I intend to use-  By using this article I will explore the whole idea that being knowledgeable may help an individual make appropriate decisions.

A leaders framework for decision making

Background – In 1993 in a fast food rest in Chicago a gunman murdered seven people. Deputy Chief Walter Gasio faces a great deal of pressure when he had to make several decision. David J. Snowden and Mary E. Boone believe it is time to Borden the tradition approach [abandon the traditional approach?] to leadership and decision making and form new perspective based on complexity science. [Of the topics you’ve introduced so far, this is the one I hope you choose to write about, Lashawn. It’s specific and grounded in a case that could keep your attention from wandering all over the landscape. Please find something concrete like this to anchor your paper.]

How I intend to use-  Deputy Chief Walter Gasio demonstrates  the different strategies which an individual can uses when they making  decisions in stressful situations. [Blah blah blah. “different strategies is another “survey piece” that says there are many ways to look at a topic. That’s the opposite of what you need to do. Pick one clear, discrete, arguable position and defend it, please.]

“sleeping on it” best for complex decisions”.

Background- Gaia Vince analyzes how complex decision and left to your unconscious and over thinking can have negative impact on your decision making. However sleeping on it can weigh the pro and cons in your decision making and the conscious mind is used for simple decision making.

How I intend to use – When making decisions weighing the pros and cons are the most efficient way when making a complex decision. [If I read you right, you want to defend pretty much every possible way of making decisions, which is not a fit thesis for a counterintuitive proposal essay.]

I will help; I will spend time; I will counsel and mentor, but you need to make yourself available and be open to advice and assistance, Lashawn.

Lashawn, I’m very happy to see your post, but you seem to have missed much of the point of yesterday’s session. Your post is full of “talks about” language we all tried to purge from posts yesterday. Both your Background and your Intend to Use sections must contain clear claims, not general topical observations.

I’ve highlighted some language that requires your attention. We haven’t had our conference yet since you were absent on your scheduled date. Make an appointment now for tomorrow please.

Lashawn, I found you a useful source.

The entire show is entertaining and worthwhile, but the part about “learning while we sleep” begins halfway through at about the 30:00/58:00 mark.
