Summaries 3 – Casmir Reihing

In the article “Do Multivitamins Really Work?” by Kiera Butler she ventures to question the 28 billion dollar industry. As an avid vitamin taker Kiera believes that these small pills will help improve her health and protect her against illness. She like so many americans waste their money annually on a substance which in reality shows no link between improving the  health of an already healthy person.

The article “Close call in death of potential organ donor”, discusses the topic of patients being prematurely pronounced dead in order for their organs to be harvested. A 26-year old man was accidentally pronounced brain dead leaving his family and some medical staff curious about why. After a third party doctor examined the patient it was concluded that he was not dead and that the premature decision was in a haste to harvest his organs.     Incidents like this can cause the public to question the motives of the doctors who they trust.

The shoe “Toms” are very popular amongst many young americans. Not only are they somewhat stylish but supposedly for every pair bought one is donated to a child in need. The idea seems very philanthropic but the cause could actually be hurting the local economy because local businesses are having to compete.The article “Do Toms Shoes Really Help People?” discusses how the company itself does not provide enough information about shoe receives the product or where the proceeds themselves actually go.
