Do Toms Shoes Really Help People?

The idea of a one-for-one company (a company that donates goods or services for every purchase) and the helpfulness or lack there of in today’s world. Toms, a company that donates a pair of basic canvas shoes to a child in developing countries for every pair of Toms bought in the US, is the focus of this article. The article also focuses on the demand  of the goods being sent to the developing countries and highlights when Indonesia was hit was a tsunami in 2006. The world sent rice as relief, but instead of helping, we crippled the local economy by competing with local farmers. The whole basis of the article is surrounded by the idea that Toms doesn’t give enough information about where the shoes are going, how they are being distributed, and where all of the money is going.

Is This Photo Ethical?

The blog post about “Is This Photo Ethical?” is a post about a picture taken of a 15 year old girl in what seems to be a developing country. The thing about the picture though, is it was taken minutes after she was shot dead for stealing two plastic chairs and a few framed pictures. The post focuses more on the process of the the picture being taken. Instead of rushing to the girl in assistance, photographers gather around the lifeless body to take pictures.

Pizza Hut at the Pyramids?

The YouTube video “KFC, Pizza Hut, and Sphinx” is a short clip taken at the Pyramids in Egypt. The video shows the Pyramids and the Sphinx, directly across from a newly opened Pizza Hut. This marks the beginning of a new appreciation for the Pyramids. This symbolizes the idea of something that used to stand for power and wealth, now stands for a vacation spot and tourist attraction.

You open with a fragment. If that’s accidental, recognize it for an illegal sentence and fix it. If it’s deliberate, what’s the rationale?

Purposeful summary uses the material from the original source to support a position, Alex. It avoids “the article is about” and “the basis of the article is surrounded by an idea” talk in favor of making a point that the article illustrates or supports. For example

Toms promises to deliver a free pair of basic canvas shoes to a child in a developing country for every pair of Toms bought in the US. According to “Do Toms Shoes Really Help People?,” Toms doesn’t share enough information with its customers to convince anyone that the shoes are going to those who really need them, or that the donated shoes help more than they disrupt the local economy that receives them. Other “relief” efforts that send products into “needy” countries have damaged local markets, says the article; for example, the rice sent by donor nations to Indonesia following the tsunami of 2006 crippled the local economy by competing with local farmers.

Is this a clear enough model to help you revise the next two summaries?
