The coffee strainer experiment that was shown to me today is truly interesting. I tried to come up with an example of why the air would stay inside the strainer after he turned it over and simply couldn’t. The only thing that I can explain about it is that the water had created some sort of barrier in the strainer. When he turned it over, the air tried to escape but the buoyancy of the water must of counteracted the air from leaving.
I understand all of that except the “buoyancy of the water,” Ryan. Thank you for lending a hand with the Monty Hall problem today. It’s a fascinating little problem that always perplexes me even when it’s fresh in my mind, but I have a terrible time telling it right, like a joke I start from the punchline and then have to explain.
Anytime, also buoyancy is the force of the water pushing up on the strainer, which is part of the reason you can float.
Sure, I understand buoyancy forcing the strainer up; I just never heard the term used to explain the force of water pushing down. What kept the strainer down was my hand.
By the way, this isn’t the story I had in mind (in the one I recall, several hundred college students all wearing identical tee shirts linked arms and faced-down the Westboro picketers). But here’s a charming tale of Hell’s Angels intimidating the protesters:
