My first reaction to the George Bush and Barack Obama face morph was merely on a surface level because I, admittedly, am not very politically invested. I do not frequently watch the news or read newspapers, which is why I believe I had a difficult time coming up with a deeper interpretation for this piece of art. At first, I simply thought it was fascinating how these two different presidents looked so much alike. Due to my lack of political knowledge, I struggled for a while to determine any other type of meaning this morph had. I honestly thought it to be just aesthetic artwork.
I looked back on the morph after taking a break for a few hours my mind was able to come up with a few more interpretations of it. I kept looking at it left to right and thought that maybe the creator was trying to illustrate the gradualness of change in the country. Although I consider myself ill-informed of politics, I do know that Obama’s campaign theme was centered on the idea of change. With this in mind, I began to think that this morph’s purpose was to indicate that changing a country is something that does not happen quickly, but is instead a step-by-step process that requires time.
Another interpretation that I was able to come up with is that both of these presidents, despite their differences, ultimately perform the same function. They each have their own views, but at the end of the day they both had the same responsibility of running the country, despite their differences in methods.
Fair enough. I’ll bet you’d do a better job at the end of the semester than you did at the beginning. Graded for portfolio.
