Bush-Obama Morph – Rachel Saltzman

Immediately, the picture struck me as awkward. Seeing the two men blend together was, and is, a weird experience for me, as I am used to seeing the men in different contexts.

From my initial point of view, Bush and Obama are two different people, and two different Presidents. The creator of this image most likely knew that his or her viewers would share my point of view, which is why he blended the images together. He is trying to illustrate the similarities the two men posses. The image reminded me of my family’s political discussions; half of them supports Obama, or voted for him, while the other half outright hates him. There are a few outliers that dislike both, or simply have no opinion. Looking at the blended Presidents reminds me that each of them is a mix of stellar, and disappointing qualities.

I’m standing with a good portion of Americans when I say that I am not a fan of either President. There is a lot of discontent in America because many people, including myself, are not satisfied with the state of the government. Obama supporters are discouraged because, supposedly, he did not bring about the “change” that he promised to bring. Meanwhile, those who oppose Obama are complaining that Bush was a far more capable President. Perhaps this mutual dissatisfaction is what prompted someone to create the Bush-Obama Morph. Perhaps, the creator of this image is trying to convey that the shift from Bush to Obama ended up in mutual disappointment. Despite the major differences between the appearance, political beliefs, and backgrounds of these two men, I believe that the country did not undergo a change for better or worse.

That’s a fun opener, Rachel. I read a similar opening just yesterday. “Kissing is weird,” somebody said as the first sentence of her essay. I bet if you google the phrase, her article will appear at the top. After that, you confuse me a bit right away. From whose point of view are Bush and Obama NOT two different people? Or do you mean that the creator of the image is that person? If that’s where you’re headed, this is a nice hint. If you have no one in mind, it’s a blind tease.

IS or WAS a weird experience? Immediately means it happened then. If you’re over it by now, you mean it was weird. Or is it weird every time?

For me it is. The blended middle photo terrifies, disturbs, upsets, saddens me every time. The effect will wear off, but for now, I don’t really want to look at it.

Are paragraphs 2 and 3 meant to explain the weirdness, Rachel? For me, they don’t.

P2. I don’t understand the transition you make from “For me, Bush and Obama are two different presidents” to “how similar they really are.” Surely you weren’t convinced by the image that you’d been wrong about the two men’s presidencies, were you?

P3. You offer too many theories here, Rachel, without making a choice. Your “mutual dissatisfaction” doesn’t result in “the Morph represents mutual disappointment.” For that to be the case, viewers would have to be disappointed in both presidents, but that’s not the claim you make. If “no change occurred,” those who thought Bush was capable would have a capable president in Obama. The final sentence sounds like your personal claim. Are we to conclude you’re dissatisfied with both presidents? It’s very hard to tell.
