WELCOME TO COMP 2

David Hodges
COLLEGE COMPOSITION II
COMP01112-6
CRN 24268
Comp 2 Section 6

Welcome, students, to your Composition II course, which begins very soon, 8am (yes, that’s 8 o’clock in the morning) on WED JAN 19, just a week from now. A few VERY CRUCIAL facts about your course that you must know before we meet.

PLEASE READ ALL 7 FACTS before you email me about when and where we’ll be meeting.

1. PHYSICAL PRESENCE REQUIRED. Your section is designated for In-Class Instruction. That means you’ll be present if you attend in person and absent if you don’t. If that’s not the kind of course you meant to enroll in, you have made a mistake. Contact your Advisor immediately to switch to a remote learning section.

ROOM CHANGE

Classes meet in Wilson Hall, Room 105. This is a ROOM CHANGE since yesterday. Wilson Hall is a common destination for music and theater students. It’s number 8 on the Campus Parking Map and faces Robinson Hall.  Link to Campus Parking Map (Links to an external site.).

2. THE COURSE IS CONDUCTED ON A BLOG. On the first day of class, you’ll sign up for a free WordPress account and join the course blog, Counterintuitive Spring 2022 . For that, you’ll need an ANONYMOUS username, one that protects your identity. Come to class prepared with a username.

3. CLASS BEGINS NOW WHEN YOU RECEIVE THIS WELCOME NOTICE. I expect you to read this Announcement and reply to it by noon on MON JAN 17. See further instructions below.

4. THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS IS CRUCIAL. My research over ten years has shown that students who do not respond to these Welcome Notices are 10% less likely to pass the course, and 25% of students who neglect the Welcome Notice AND miss the first class or two eventually drop the course or fail. Please start the semester strong. Come to class with a username, get set up on the blog, get into email contact with your Favorite Professor, and request and respond to feedback early and often.

5. CANVAS. WE DON’T USE IT.

  • All course work will be conducted on the blog.
  • All assignments will be posted to the blog.
  • Deadlines will be posted to the blog.
  • A daily Agenda for every class meeting will be posted on the blog.
  • Daily graded class notes will be posted to the blog.
  • Feedback will be given and responded to on the blog.
  • The Syllabus and Course Outline will be posted to the blog.
  • You will schedule appointments and conferences with your professor on the blog.

6. EXCEPT FOR GRADES.

  • I will use the handy Grading function of Canvas to post grades for Daily Notes and all graded assignments.

7. EMAIL ME.

  • Send me an email by noon MON JAN 17 to myfavoriteprofessor@davidhodges.com
  • Introduce yourself to me by formal name and nickname or preferred name if you have one.
  • Tell me where and when we’ll be meeting for the first time and what you’ll find at Canvas.
  • Tell me the best experience you’ve had so far with any writing course or from any writing instructor.
  • If you’ve never had a good writing instruction experience, tell me about your favorite teacher ever.
  • Then share your impression—based on this Welcome Notice and what you’ve seen of the blog—of whether you think you’ll be a good fit for this course and for your new favorite professor.
