The ted talk was interesting because I have not taken physics in college yet but I can agree that science is always changing. This is like what I was arguing in my rebuttal argument that there had been more studies that had been conducted after the statement from the doctor that blue light has no effect.

The zero-G experience looks very interesting but not taking the opportunity to try it would be wrong. But knowing that the plane is going up and down multiple times as I am scared of heights.

The lesson learned when doing feedback is that my writing will never be perfect there will always be something that is just not working well. This is why the art of writing is the best because it keeps you busy.

The self-reflective statements are forms of arguments so there needs to be evidence not only saying what assignment you conducted throughout the semester.

Nice notes, NJ. I’m glad to hear the revision process makes sense to you. (By the way, how does a fear of heights prevent you from taking that ride in a closed plane? Could you even tell you were thousands of feet above the earth?)

if you have not submitted an assignment, or just did recently, it is too late for feedback.
leave a comment so that prof knows to check it and review the assignment posted.
you will decide on a day to conference on monday when you come in and complete the portfolio check.
    make revisions to white paper
dropping your lowest grade from the 75% can have a huge impact on your average’
get yourself organized with what belongs in the portfolio
the best writers do less rewriting after the draft, as opposed to before initial submission. They do revision as they are working
check formatting when you copy into white paper or a post on the blog

  3. Say something unexpected then prove it to be true

No more feedback except for on specific things on the essay, autobiography, and reflection

if things aren’t graded- ask for a grade/regrade

Going through reflections- Need to fix some things. I think it’s funny because I assumed our professor was the audience (e.g. would know about the assignments and things like that) but I now know I have to go back and alter it for the right audience. It’s funny to think that it’s one of the core values to know your audience and I could probably use these notes or my first draft of the reflection as a source for proving that I will adjust to my audience once I know it.

  5. We began class with “Stephen Hawking Was Wrong” . We were talking about possible openings for essays. And what is the best way to grab your reader’s attention? We all know that Hawking is a very smart man, so what better way to grab their attention than refuting that and saying he is wrong at something. We then began to discuss the final portion of the semester. Posting arguments for the first time, you are too late for feedback. Same for a post you have never posted feedback on. But if you are already engaged in feedback you still can ask specific questions. Also to be sure to leave a reply if you have a missing grade. We are making sure we are getting all our end of semester tasks complete. Also to do our course evaluations and rate my professor.

If your work has been improved since its initial grade then you can ask for a regrade.
The final grading process will begin on Monday, May 2, 2022.
If you are desperate to improve your games after May 2, 2022.
You can drop your least successful paper from your portfolio grade, which will in turn most likely improve your grade.

Zero gravity seems so fun… until you bump your head… but would that even hurt if you’re weightless?

Relating to the music video, I can’t even begin to imagine how many takes it took in order to have such seamless choreography. Impressive.

Overall, I found breaking down the large research paper into shorter arguments made the material more easily digestible which allowed each argument to be approached and broken down in a more thorough manner.

Is it possible to be too thorough in my bibliography? Is adding too much after one strong sentence ultimately taking away from the work?

Only sources that were quoted in the essay should be in the references section. The White paper should have a combination of all the sources found throughout the semester which is most likely more than the sources used in the references section.

In class, we watched a Zero-G music video which was very interesting to see since I have never seen it before. The video matched the song perfectly. I liked that this video was included in the lecture since it helped wake up the class.

We also talked about the assignments we were given throughout the semester as well as how beneficial the feedback was. In my opinion, the feedback was very helpful but sometimes it was hard to understand.

There is also no more feedback for those who did not ask for feedback before or turn in assignments. There is still room for improvement in the bibliography and reflections. We also decided that those who arrive early for the portfolio verification will get their work graded first compared to those who show up later throughout the class.

The best hypothesis is ones that lead researchers to the hypothesis that is right
A thinking, performance, rewrite, and science course which is what this class is, has three steps
    Have a great idea
    Express briefly and clearly
    Illustrate with specific sensory details

Name something and it’s yours. When you have something, but you can’t seem to explain it, then give it a label.
Knowing your audience is very important. Especially with an argument the key is to know your audience in order to have the best chance of persuading the readers.

This is the last content class. We have one more class on 12/13 that will solely be dedicated to our portfolio. This class can be as quick or as long as we make it. If we arrive early we can meet with professor Hodges early and be out before the end of class.
The best possible hypothesis is one that leads others towards a hypothesis that is a little more right than the one we provided. The more hypothesis we prove wrong the closer we get to finding a true hypothesis.
My favorite quote is “science is the great antidote to the poison of enthusiasm and superstition.”
Use small phrases or names to condense our work and avoid wordiness.
We can continue revising our paper even after our portfolio is due. If we haven’t asked for feedback yet it is too late. I have done numerous rounds of feedback therefore I am eligible to continue asking for feedback and making revisions.

  17. alwaystired247's avatar alwaystired247 says:

Saying something like “Stephen Hawking was wrong,” will instantly catch a reader’s attention. Most people assume he was always right because he was such a genius, but in reality, the majority of people are wrong. People do the best with what they have but chances are, in the future when there are technological and scientific advances, somebody else will discover even more. The best answer is the one that is closest to right. If we are able to admit we are wrong, we will do better in proving ourselves to be right. Our real goal should be for future readers to detect our flaws and form an updated, more accurate version of our hypothesis. Following this, the cycle will continue.
This is a thinking, performance, rewriting, and science course. All of these assertions are made for the same reasons, which is that we have great ideas, illustrate them clearly, and then express their details.
Not all name has a name. Most of them are forgotten because of this. Naming them something specific builds sense memory to add language to what we experience. If you write a journal on your trip to Ireland and describe one of the greens you saw as “mint popsicle,” you are more likely to get a detailed memory in your head than if you just said “I saw a lot of greens.”
Where we are changes our perspective about everything. No stars are lined up the same way as they are on our own front porch. Most constellations only appear that way from our location. They have changed greatly from the beginning of time. They only have meaning because of where we are standing. This is a good belief to apply to people, who only agree with us because we share a very limited perspective.
All text is argument. Placing a sign on a bridge such as “No fishing from bridge” is a proposal argument that is more effective when you know your audience. If your audience in this scenario is kids, chances are they will not question your authority.
Assuming we know your opposing view is a waste of time. Usually, what we think is the opposite of our argument is not even really the opposite and when we finally reach an agreement, we end up in a gray area that nobody wants to hear about.

  18. giantsfan224's avatar giantsfan224 says:

    – Embrace that you are right when speaking about things of the past, but acknowledge that you are wrong because there is still a lot left undiscovered.
    – Demand your readers’ attention.
    – Writing is always a science course. Our work is always changing and with revisions, we are fixing the “wrong” work.
    – Value of hypothesis is to provoke the minds of those that are smarter than we are to offer a strong alternative.
    – Provoke the next generations of writers so that they can replace “our ridiculousness” with the “ridiculousness.”
    – If a hypothesis is proven false, that is still a success as you are eliminating a possible true hypothesis.
    – Nature of a research paper is not to know the answers to everything, but to ask the right questions.
    – The perception that is created in a small phrase is important in making people agree with you.
    – When we name things we are much more likely to internalize them.
    – Where we stand changes perspective about everything.
    – Pretend to have authority to get what you want in writing.
    – “color on color” model is way better than “grey on grey” model.

  19. – The best way to start an assignment is to make an overly exaggerated claim to grab the reader’s attention.
    – By coming out and saying Stephen Hawking was wrong is a great way to get the reader to want to continue reading the paper.
    – This is a science course just as much as it is a re-writing course. The hypothesis we created at the beginning semester allows us to use the scientific method to prove or disprove our original claim.
    – If arguments are posted for the first time, they will not receive feedback.
    – If feedback was never requested for previous assignments, none will be given.
    – Changes can still be made to assignments until the final meeting.
    – The purpose of an argument is not to pick the black or white side; it is to create a new color and give a different stance.
    – The opposite of a black sneaker is broccoli as they have no two categories in common.

    Class Notes-

Hypothesis are always wrong. The best lead people to something that is a little more true than the one we have.

Writing is always a science course. We start with a hypothesis and incrementally make it better over time. Similar to how the scientific process works.

If we have a good idea express it briefly and clearly

Changing the phrase or naming something can completely change the perception of something. Death tax vs estate tax

you can make a proposal argument stick by choosing the right audience

Thinking you know the opposite point of view is a waste of time. Blending two opposing opinions together to write creates a boring essay.

Grey on grey is bad. Don’t be afraid to say shocking ideas.

-the best hypothesis is wrong and leads the reader to a hypothesis that’s a little more right than what we had.

I enjoy the quote by J.R.S. Haldane. His section shows the complexity of how our brain
and thinking process truly works. There’s never a black-and-white answer or a perfect way of finding the answer to a question, but all we can do is try.

That was a pretty cool music video.
Remember, for future writing, name something, and it’s yours. By calling your idea, it will make 50 or 100 words into a few words.

Outrageously think; I feel I did this well in my writing this semester. I started trying to find a middle ground early on, but by the end of the semester, I found a point of view that I hadn’t come across before and ran with it.

Ultimately, we can’t take a black-and-white stance in an argument; true compromise doesn’t come from proceeding in this manner. Yet, our world doesn’t seem to work this way.

  23. fatboy489zt's avatar fatboy489zt says:

Your writing should always start off by grabbing the reader’s attention. If this means be the most exaggerating person ever, then do that

Exaggerating is fun and makes the reader want to keep reading

The more ideas that you have, the better your grade is going to be.

Everything that is written down can be and will be turned into an argument. Even that sentence can be an argument.

“Where we stand changes our perspective on everything”

No more feedback if you are just posting a new assignment, but you can still get feedback if you posted the writing a while ago and you are still working on it.

    Notes Dec 8
The best hypothesis can be the one that even though it is inevitably wrong leads to a “more right than before” conclusion. Attention-grabbing can begin right in the title.
There wasn’t a box to say which science quote I liked but I liked the second one because I like the contrasting connotation of the words and I also liked the way it chose to convey something we all deal with; the burden of our consciousness.
Naming something correctly and finding the phrase that says a thousand words is amazing and helpful if you can do it. For example the correct naming of an estate tax and a death tax. Obviously, we prefer a tax on rich people than dead people. Finding that perfect phrase to make people adhere to taxes.
Perspective you offer can help draw somones opinion so giving someone a new perspective on something can help your case. Naming new things that also seem to make sense can also help people align with what you are saying.
No point in finding out who you are directly up against in an argument because there are limited options and alternatives who could be in line with you, completely, against, you or somewhere in the middle.

  26. 12/8
Start the argument with something outrageous, “Stephen Hawking was wrong.” The answers can change while the questions stay the same. Someone else’s hypothesis can always be incorrect in some way.

This is a science course, a thinking course, a performance course, and a rewriting course.

Try to make a small phrase that can replace 100 words. “Estate tax” turned into “Death Tax” to make people adverse to it. If you name an idea you will own it. Then you can manipulate it to work in favor of your argument. Naming helps the reader remember a idea is even if it is abstract. Constellations only “exist” because of their names. Name a concept to own it.

All text is an argument- No Fishing From Bridge – four words that made an effective proposal argument.

It’s too late for first-time feedback, only the continuation of feedback will be responded to.

Outrageous thinking- the opposite of a black shoe can’t be a white shoe. There’s no line between two ideas or arguments, only a circle. One can always reach back to the other. There is no compromise where both sides win, so don’t have the argument in the first place.

You can still get regrades until the portfolios are graded.

    – Orion’s belt doesn’t exist, unless you’re standing on Professor Hodges front porch. Someone just decided that these 9 or 10 stars were “related and connected”
The opposite of a black sneaker
    – We don’t want our debates to be black and white, we want to create our own color. When two sides of an argument are concrete, black and white opinions, both sides often meet in some middle ground, and the argument was never really solved
    – We don’t want to end up with a compromise, the goal of an argument is to sway the other side to yours
    – Look for differences in either side of your argument, and take a position on one of those differences, and refute it. No one wins if you take the side of the compromise.

This grabs the reader’s attention because Stephen Hawkings is a very smart guy do not start with he is a smart guy. No, instead attack with your claim as your sword in the first sentence.
