Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development. As I developed a research position paper for this course, I also developed a white paper to store my work and research. My White Paper demonstrates my usage of various social and interactive practices because as I continued to read more about Dual Enrollment and AP courses I added my gained knowledge to the continuously growing document. The blog, being public to not just the class but to the entire world, is where I submitted my white paper so it could also be viewed by my fellow classmates to examine my progress as well. Throughout my research, I found myself occasionally looking upon my fellow peers work in the blog to make sure that I was caught up. My white paper in particular was a reliable source for me because it helped me determine which, of many available sources on my subject, were useful source to read and include in my paper. Overall, the white paper can be used as a representation to my fulfillment of core value #1 because it was a piece that not only was interactive with other classmates but also continuously developing throughout the duration of my research of Dual Enrollment and AP courses.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities. My Definition Argument demonstrates that I read critically and place texts into conversation with one another because it was the first out of many times I utilized my research into course work. Through this paper I was able to define the terms of my argument so that my audience and I were on the same page and this required an abundant amount of base research. This helped to prevent confusion and misunderstanding between I and my audience regarding terms described in my topic. This assignment also helped to synthesis ideas from various discourse communities because as I looked into defining terms of my topic it required me to think and take the position that Dual and Ap courses aren’t as effective as they are perceived to see. In order to create the best possible understanding for my audience, some of the terms had to be defined, for instance the terms ” gifted” and “talented” had to be defined for my audience. Some people may view these terms with different perspectives, restrictions etc so in this word I took words and phrases such as these and broke them down for the purpose of clarity in my argument. Since my Definition Argument required me to read to understand and take a stance in numerous areas of my research is a primary example of my application of core value #2.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments. My Rebuttal Argument demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose of my writing because in order to refute points that could be made against my argument I needed to understand why I was writing the paper in the first place. Same goes for audience, without defining my audience I would not have been able to refute an opposing audience. Audiences that I highlighted in my work include students, parents, and administration, and those whose opinions I refuted were individuals who created or have a say in the development of higher education programs. Lastly, although the contexts of my writing was developed through each of my “short argument” assignments, this one particularly achieved this by allowing me to understand that there will be others who won’t agree with my position and will require me to know the content better to argue on behalf of my opinion. For instance, one point that I had to heavily refute in this paper is that Dual Enrollment and AP courses save money for students. In order to be able to refute them I had to understand my topic, and audiences thoroughly therefore through my Rebuttal Argument paper I met the requirements of core value #3.

Core Value 4. My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations. My Visual Rhetoric piece provides evidence of my development in locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations because the main premise of the assignment was to analyze an illustration. The illustration I had was for an Ad campaign for Alzheimer’s but as I was previewing the video I had to go in without this knowledge or the audio so that I was relying only on the illustrations. From this analyzation I was able to generate my own ideas whether they lead to the actual purpose of the illustration or not, it was up to me to take the illustration as it was and come to a conclusion about its significance. I was able to notice the significant difference sound made to my interpretation of the images because after hearing it with sound a lot of notes could be modified in my rewrite to better match the actual topic of the video. Overall, by making me chose, and look more in depth into a pieces of illustrative work I was able to conduct an insightful evaluation and draw various conclusions about the ad.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation. My Casual Argument demonstrates the premise of this core value because it was one of many assignment that was required to do previously research on and reference in my work. In this work I had to explain the cause for the development of the AP and Dual Enrollment system as it is, so this evidently required research and properly citing that research. I was able to do this through learning an incorporating proper citation techniques such proper usage of quotations, block quotes, and citing resources in the reference section. For this particular paper I needed to be in conversation with other authors discuss the flaws in Dual Enrollment and AP courses and the reasons for those flaws occurring. The Casual Argument since it allowed me to find sources, cite them properly, and have a conversation with them through my work is a good representation of Core Value #5.

  1. I did place this in feedback please since it is a part of my final portfolio. Just want to make sure it is correctly done and good enough to have submitted in my portfolio.

This is fine, princess, and will likely not harm your Portfolio grade, but that doesn’t mean it’s flawless, of course. If you wanted to improve it, you’d need specific details, as with any piece of persuasive writing. Almost every claim you make here is generic and could apply to any student’s work.

Imagine I wrote a 5-paragraph essay and didn’t mention my topic in 3 out of 5 paragraphs. Suppose my reader didn’t get a clue what I was arguing about until halfway through the third paragraph, when she read this:

Audiences that I highlighted in my work include students, parents, and administration, and those whose opinions I refuted were individuals who created or have a say in the development of higher education programs.

And then, two paragraphs later, I shared this with her.

For this particular paper I needed to be in conversation with other authors to generate a conversation about the flaws in Dual Enrollment and AP courses and the reasons for those flaws occurring.

My reader would have a very hard time telling someone else what my argument was, or how I had used Core Values to develop it.
