Needs a Title

0:01

There appears to be a silver knight sitting on top of a horse during the daytime what looks to be the afternoon. The silver knight appears to be ready for battle because he has his helmet covered over his face to shield from any wrongful attackers. The silver knight looks like he is staring down something or someone that may be his opponent. Behind the knight you can see an interesting mountain range almost as if it were a canyon as well as trees, dirt, and a fence that appears to look like a stable fence to hold horses almost like an arena.

In the next frame you can see a different knight on his horse staring at what I assume to be the silver knight. You can tell this knight is different from the silver knight because his horse appears to have black and gold armor on its head. Our gold horsed knight appears to be battle ready and might be on the verge of attacking our silver knight. Behind our gold horsed knight you can see a fence, trees, and telephone polls. This tells me that they are not in a medieval time or age and the setting for this scene is present day real-life.

  1. 0:03-0:06

The gold horsed knight raises a sword with his right arm then tucks the hilt of his sword firmly into his chest while gripping the sword’s handle with a readiness to kill.  The golden horsed knight is also gripping the hairs on the horse’s neck as if he is about to ride toward our silver knight with great haste. The camera frame switches from a close up of the golden horses knight’s chest to the face and upper half of the golden horses knight showing that he is ready to battle as he holds his sword high and close to his chest.

  1. 0:07

The camera cuts to a horse’s hooves kicking up dirt as if it is ready to run. From this I am getting the sense that these two knights are about to attack one another or joust.

  1. 0:08-0:10

The camera now shows us a close up of the golden horse knight’s helmeted face. It appears to be that he is staring down the silver knight before he attempts to strike him. The camera then shows us a close up of the silver knight’s helmeted face where you can see the silver knight staring at something by his side; this could possibly be his sword.

  1. 0:12

This scene shows us that our silver knight is not looking at a sword, but instead his phone. Also this scene shows us that his horse is wearing blue armor for his saddle. The silver knight appears to be reading a text from his princess. The silver knight is also holding the reins of his horse as if he is ready to ride, but is too busy trying to read his text messages.

  1. 0:13

The golden horse and its knight take off with great speed in the direction of the silver knight. Also I am starting to get a feeling that they are at a horse stable in present day jousting.

  1. 0:14

The silver knight’s horse takes off as well in the direction of the golden horse knight, but the silver knight is not holding a weapon or sword rather his phone to combat against a sword.

  1. 0:15

Both knights and horses enter the camera frame as they appear to be heading at full speed in the direction of each other. They are most definitely jousting except our silver knight is using a phone and the golden horse knight is  using a sword. Behind them are trees that look like they are from the southern part of the country, maybe Arizona. Also there appears to be a house behind them almost like a little ranchers or farmers home.

  1. 0:16

The camera shows the silver knight riding his horse in the direction of our golden knight. The silver knight appears to be holding his iphone in his right hand. He could be sending a message or using his iphone as a weapon.

  1. 0:17

The camera pans and shows us the golden horse’s knight running in the direction of our silver knight to battle him/her. The golden horse’s knight has got his sword raised as if it is ready to slash and cut into our silver knight.

  1. 0:18

In this frame you can see our silver knight is about to clash with our golden horse’s knight, but it appears that the silver knight is looking at his phone and not his enemy. The silver knight could be texting his princess and driving the horse into certain danger. The silver knight’s head and eyes appear to be affixed to his phone. From this I am starting to get the feeling that this advertisement is meant to show people that they should not text and drive.

  1. 0:19-0:20

The screen cuts to black and shows us a message that reads “Don’t Text And Ride”  from this I am for sure that this advertisement is meant to spread awareness to the public that they should not text and drive because it is very dangerous. The two knights riding their horses are metaphors. The silver knight is supposed to resemble somebody who’s on the road texting and driving. While the golden horse’s knight is somebody who is driving that is ready and paying attention to the road. For the silver knight it shows that someone who texts and drives has no idea how dangerous and harmful it can be to themselves or to others.

  1. 0:22-0:23

The word ride gets switched to the word drive. Now it says “Don’t Text and Drive” so I guess I was right.

  1. 0:24-0:30

The black screen with the dialogue written in white switches from “Don’t Text and Drive” to “It’s Joust Not Worth It” which seems to be almost like a comedy relief for a very serious matter. From there the black screen changes to a road and it reads STOPTEXTSSTOPWRECKS.ORG which appears to be an info site to get help if you struggle from breaking the habit of texting and driving.

    It’s a start, Juice.
You offer some visual details from the first second of video, but not nearly enough, no context, and no indication why the creator might have chosen the images she chose.

Is she trying to trick the viewer into thinking this is a bit of historical footage depicting an actual knight? Or can we tell immediately (how can we tell?) that this is a contemporary piece of video? You don’t indicate a locale except to mention distant mountains, but what’s a knight doing here? Is this a Medieval Festival? Are we about to be treated to silly reenactments for a cheering crowd? As discussed often in class, we immediately start to form judgments from the first second of video, and a good director takes advantage of our prejudices. So what’s the rhetorical value of what you’re seeing? Continue to respond to that question with every new time-stamped segment.
