“At home after school, she makes Katie a pancake snack and then, while Katie shows me the website for a summer camp that teaches military spy skills, Brannan gets back to work.”
This quote is an Analogy Claim. It is used to paint a picture of the surroundings of Brannan and help the reader feel more connected to her. This analogy is compiled with casual claims but when brought together they create an analogy.
“Because she also helps thousands of other people—measured by website and social-media interactions”
In this phrase the author uses a numerical claim to express the vast amount of people that are helped by Brannan. The claim is cited by social media interactions.
“Through Family of a Vet, a nonprofit created “to help you find your way, find the information you need,”
The quote above is a definition claim. The author takes the liberty to define what the foundation, Family of a Vet, is.
“To help you find your way, find the information you need, and find a way not only to cope with life after combat…but to survive and thrive!”
This quote is an example of a Recommendation or Proposal Claim. This quote is referring the foundations mission statement. One could argue it is also a casual claim but I believe the end of the quote, “but to survive and thrive”, is a recommendation to the reader.
“Brannan founded the organization in 2007”
This quote is an example of a Factual Claim because it is indisputable. The foundation was founded in 2007 and you can not disprove that.
“Life after the first tour had been pretty normal. “Things were a little…off,” Caleb was edgy, distant, but he did not forget entire conversations minutes later, did not have to wait for a stable mental-health day and good moment between medication doses to be intimate with his wife, and then when he finally tried, pray to Christ for one of the times when it’s good sex, not one of the times when a car door slams outside and triggers him, or the emotion becomes so unbearable that he freezes, gets up, and walks wordlessly out the door. All that didn’t happen until after the second tour.”
This large quote above is an example of an analogy claim. This quote reflects upon the hardships that PTSD has caused the Vine’s family by illustrating examples of specific scenarios they encountered. It could also be stated that the quote is a comparative claim. It could be a comparative claim because the author is comparing life after the first tour and life after the second tour and the differences. After the second tour, Caleb was experiencing PTSD and it caused an effect on everyone around him.
“Brannan was in a terrible place”
The author used an Evaluative Claim for this example. Mac made a judgment, which very well might be correct, to assert that Brannan was in a terrible place. This could be argued so it is not a factual claim.
“Danna had been through much of the exact same turmoil, decades ago, and had opened a center to help get Vietnam vets benefits and educate their spouses and communities about their condition.”
This quote is an example of a casual claim. I believe this is a casual claim because it shows a cause and effect. Because Danna delt with the same externalities of PTSD she decided to create a center for educating veterans spouses on their conditions.
“What choice do I have?” Brannan asks about running her own organization. “This is the only reason I am well. People care when you tell them. They just don’t know. They want to help and they want to understand.”
This quote is an example of an Ethical or Moral Claim. This claim presents a judgment on people by stating they “just don’t know” and then follows by stating “they want to help and they want to understand.” These excerpts are both judging society.
“So, I just have to keep going and educating”
This last quote is an example of an Recommendation or Proposal Claim. She is proposing a way forward with this quote and it is that she must continue helping people learn about PTSD. The quote followed an ethical claim and typically recommendation and ethical claims go hand in hand.
—I don’t see the Analogy Claim here, GoBirds. Does it say Katie or Brannan or their activities are LIKE something else?
—It’s mostly informative and Factual, but I do think there’s an Illustrative Claim in mentioning that Katie yearns for Spy Camp. Elsewhere, she brags about Dad killing an Iraqi who had a knife. She seems a little obsessed with military? violence?
“Because she also helps thousands of other people—measured by website and social-media interactions”
In this phrase the author uses a numerical claim to express the vast amount of people that are helped by Brannan. The claim is cited by social media interactions.
—Technically there’s no Number here, GoBirds. But I get your point. I wonder if you agree it’s Evaluative or Attributive. The author doesn’t know if Brannan’s interactions actually HELP. She distances herself from making THAT claim by saying that the volume of interactions INDICATES she’s helping.
Feel free to revise for Grade Improvement, but be sure to let me know you’ve made revisions; otherwise, I probably will not notice.
