I partly agree, partly disagree, with your Evaluative Claims, BB.

    Evaluative Claim:

“Secondary traumatic stress has been documented in the spouses of veterans with PTSD from Vietnam”

This statement can be backed up with someone with authority or has expertise in the field.

—Whether spouses HAVE secondary traumatic stress (and whether such a thing exists) can be evaluated by an authority, and is therefore Evaluative.
—But that they have been DIAGNOSED with STS is a Factual Claim. True or False, it’s still factual, not Evaluative.

“Katie Vines, the first time I meet her, is in trouble”

Stating that Katie Vines is in trouble based on their opinion and could later be proved by a doctor.

—Not sure what kind of trouble is meant here. Is the author claiming that she is “suffering from a diagnosed illness” kind of trouble? Or did the author chance upon Katie “when her family or her teachers have had to discipline her” kind of trouble? One’s Evaluative. The other is a simple observational fact.

“Her eyebrows are heavily creased when she shakes her head and says quietly again, “I was so mad.”

Repeatedly states that she is mad. She could have tests done to see if she has anger issues.

—Not Evaluative. Her eyebrows are creased. She shakes her head. She speaks quietly. All Factual Claims based on the interviewer’s personal observation. Katie could certainly be evaluated for “anger issues,” but the author makes no claim at all about a diagnosis or the cause of her anger.

MY REACTIONS TO SOME FACTUAL CLAIMS:

“lowering her voice and her eyes guiltily”
—Katie’s movements when her mother is talking to her
“lowering her voice and eyes” is Factual. “guiltily” is Evaluative.”

    “her eyes narrowing incredulously”
—Katie’s movements when her mother is talking to her
“her eyes narrowing” is Factual. “incredulously” is Evaluative.”

“Trauma is a contagious disease; it affects everyone that has close contact with a traumatized person” in some form or another, to varying degrees and for different lengths of time.
—It gives us a statement that is said to be true until proven that Trauma isn’t contagious.
“Trauma is a contagious disease” is an excellent example of Analogy.

“Trauma is really not something that happens to an individual,”
—Stated by Robert Motta, a clinical psychologist and psychology professor at Hofstra University, “who wrote a few of the many medical-journal articles about secondary trauma in Vietnam vets’ families.”
It’s factual to name the Author. It’s a Credibility Claim to identify his credentials to build believability.

“Since they’ve got a six-year-old in the house.”
—Brannan and Caleb have a six-year child that lives within their home.
“Since” is pure Causal language. It always means something happens or exists BECAUSE of something else.

Still helpful? Or is this getting annoying?

    • Nope still helpful, thank you for taking the time to leave feedback once again. I didn’t really know that singular words could be a claim.Fo r example when you said guilty and incredulously is evaluative claims and the words before that would be considered factual.
