Polio Vaccinators Assassinated
It seems counterintuitive that curing a child-targeting disease is stirring up negative emotions and malicious action among Pakistani groups. In Karachi, five Pakistani vaccination workers were shot to help administer polio vaccinations. Being one of the three only countries with polio, despite the recent spring-up in New York, Pakistan has made frivolous efforts to eradicate polio. While some would see the eradication of polio as a step in the right direction, others keep grudges close to their heart while seeing to it that polio vaccinations should be stopped. The stunt pulled by the CIA using a fake vaccination campaign to gather information kept certain groups on their toes despite polio being a problem in only two other countries. Counterintuitive that polio, an paralyzing disease, is protected by the very people it is targeting, to protect their country. So past transgressions to spy on Pakistan scared specific groups so bad they either believe the polio vaccination campaigns are a hoax or spies attempting to slip in. Countries are constantly trying to protect themselves, but sometimes forgetting that protecting their country and the people within it are different.
Thought becomes Actions
It seems counterintuitive that an ECoG, a machine that uses electrodes to detect brain signals, can express thoughts from a person better than the person themself. An ECoG has amazing potential in how it can help decode the mystery of the human brain. By detecting certain signals in the brain we can decipher thoughts that a person is having. This could open the door for things like lie detectors too. Maybe the brain knows if it’s lying and the ECoG can pick this up. A machine that was used in the 1950s can turn into a new future where mute people could talk if an ECoG could decipher their thoughts and project them through a speaker. Technology is advancing in ways beyond belief, leading to the constant questions about man vs machine. This machine gives hope to those who can benefit, while also scaring those who fear a mind-reading machine. Despite fears about machines surpassing man, we have continued to reach new lengths in science. This old machinery no less still stands to pave the way for future progression.
Pizza Hut at the Pyramids
It seems counterintuitive that a monumental masterpiece that baffles scientists and historians is turned into a funnel for businesses. Across the street from the Great Pyramid is a Pizza that serves its customers well as they take in the sights of the pyramids. It is a great example of historic pieces becoming less important due to businesses that benefit from them. Rather than honoring or at least acknowledging the masterpiece’s importance, we make money off of people that want to see it. This loss of significance has led people to take for granted the mystery behind the pyramids as a step stool for local attraction and business. Attractions become havens for shopping, food, and entertainment, while gradually losing their original purpose. The pyramids were magnificent tombs for pharaohs, and now they are backgrounds for photos.
Hard to believe shooting them would make them more effective:
I’d be interested in seeing a machine that can turn into the future:
