“Pizza Hut at the Pyramids”
It seems counterintuitive that an ancient Egyptian structure and a Pizza Hut would be just a few feet away from each other. These pyramids are a humongous part of history and were built as monuments to hold pharaohs once they passed on. These were people who were once the kings of Egypt and were extremely respected and high-status individuals. Now, after visiting the place where they were laid to rest, you can stop and get Pizza Hut afterwards and you don’t even have to drive. Everything in the area looks like it fits in with one another except the Pizza Hut and KFC. It is almost as if they do not deserve to be near such wonderful creations. The pyramids are a historical landmark whose beauty is being destroyed by the nearby fast food places. They are being capitalized off by greedy companies who do not care about why they were made or the stories they hold. All that concerns them is the amount of tourists that will visit the sight and then head to their stores afterwards. These chain restaurants are putting money above all and disrespecting history all in an attempt to make more money. Pizza Hut has enough money and should not have to open at such a sacred and important location.
“Men Define Rape”
It seems counterintuitive that men will take advantage of women because they feel entitled to their bodies, but then blame and harass them for their own terrible actions. Since the beginning of time, men have felt like it is their job to define rape – more specifically, when it’s a man doing it to a women – even though they are not the ones who are scarred from the process and have to deal with the consequences. This is sadly not a surprise though, considering they felt like they owned women in the first place if they were to either do or defend such a horrible offense. Many of them think women have to fit tons of standards in order for what happened to them to actually be rape, such as a virgin, unmarried, white, or able to fight back. Some men go as far as to say that the true victim of rape is the father of the women because it is damage to their property. While this definition is very outdated, it is still similar to the beliefs of some, because thousands of years later, they have still not gotten any better at choosing an adequate definition of the act. It is time they educate themselves and call it what it is: a selfish and disgusting crime that damages another human being mentally and sometimes even physically.
“The Marshmallow Test”
It seems counterintuitive that the researchers who carried out The Marshmallow Test had claimed that the children who failed lacked self-control, yet failed to consider how their upbringing may be what truly determines if they ate the snack or not. The Marshmallow Test was a psychological study conducted by Walter Mischel, where kids were placed in a room alone with a snack, and told by researchers that, if they waited fifteen minutes and did not eat it, they would be allowed to have two of them instead. According to researchers, the children who did not give into their cravings were more likely to have a successful future when it came to school, careers, and even relationships. Recently, though, a researcher named Celeste Kidd questioned this conclusion, with the homeless children she used to work with in mind. She figured that if they were given the test, they would definitely eat the marshmallow, not because of a lack of self-control but because of a lack of trust. She then performed her own experiment where children were given art supplies and told that if they did not use it, they would get a better set. Some kids who did not use them were actually given better supplies, while others were told that there were no better supplies and they waited for no reason. When she gave the same group of children the marshmallow test afterwards, her results proved her hypothesis to be true. The children who were rewarded for not using the art supplies were the ones who waited for the marshmallow, while the ones who were deceived did not. Instead of measuring self-control, The Marshmallow Test actually measures whether or not the child deems the marshmallow worth waiting for, and if they truly believe they will get a second one as a reward.
