0.00 The video begins in the daytime with a full body side shot of three people who just arrived inside a middle-class home. By the door, is a teenage African American boy wearing a backpack. In front of his eyes is a wall full of pictures, which he seems to be mesmerized by, thus raising the viewer’s suspicions about what is there. Not too far behind him is a middle-aged Hispanic woman who is grinning while watching him as he stares. Near her, is a middle-aged Hispanic man with a duffle bag hanging from his shoulder, also watching the young boy.

0.02 At this point in the video the camera shifts frames and is now only focused on the teenage boy’s face. He still seems to be captivated by what is on the wall. The switching of frames to the boy’s fascinated facial expressions further draws the audience to wonder what he is looking at and allows them to believe that it must have some symbolic meaning.

0.06 The video then shifts its focus to the middle-aged man and woman. The video depicts them both looking at the boy as he continues to look at the pictures on the wall. While looking, they are smiling. The addition of this gives an appeal to the viewer’s emotions, as it raises warm feelings towards the situation.

0.08 During this moment the camera finally switches its focus from the people to the pictures on the wall. There are 3 total pictures shown. The picture to the left shows the middle-aged man and woman holding each other closely, thus allowing the audience to conclude that they are in a romantic relationship with each other and that the home is theirs. The picture to the right is of a young Hispanic girl and a boy, which makes the audience hypothesize that they are the children of the couple. Finally, the picture in the middle portrays the middle-aged couple and the two young kids.

Having that in place, solidifies the fact that the adults are in a relationship with two young kids. Moreover, placing it in the middle allows for it to be the audience’s focal point and deemed important. Showing the much-anticipated image also stimulates the audience to question the significance the picture has to the black teenage boy.

0.12 The setting has completely changed, as the middle-aged man, woman, and teenage boy are upstairs in a bedroom. The camera is mainly focused on the teenage boy, as both the older woman and man have half of their body cut out of the frame. In the background, one can see a freshly made bed with the duffle bag that the man was holding on it. These slight details grant the audience to believe that the boy is staying over and that is his room.

0.13 At this point the boy is sitting on the bed with the camera strictly focused on his face. He is looking around with a slightly confused look on his face as if he is a novice at the moment. The addition of this would allow the viewer to speculate that he has not been in many situations like this.

0.16 The frame includes two kids playing soccer on the front lawn while the black teen is watching from the porch. We can determine that the two kids playing soccer on the lawn are the children of the couple. The shot was taken from a low view across the street, thus presenting the kids on the lawn closer than the teenager on the porch. The reason for this is to depict the unfamiliarity that the black teenager has with the kids and the feeling of not belonging. Also, the low camera shot gives off the gloomy emotions associated with the moment.

0.22 During this moment the teen is at the dinner table with the couple and their kids. The camera is zoomed in on the teen’s face, thus showing an expression communicating that he is uncomfortable with the situation. The inclusion of this detail as well as the fact he was confused to be staying in a room of his own, permits the audience to recognize that the boy has a different and less fortunate upbringing.

0.25 The young boy is shown getting ice cream from the ice cream truck and conversing with other neighborhood kids. He seems extremely happy and is finally starting to loosen up. This was also included to appeal to the viewer’s emotions, by giving them a sense of happiness and hope for the teen as he was doing as well before.

0.29 At this time, the video shows the teenage boy playing soccer with the family. The camera angle is slightly above the midline, which further supports the positive emotions exhibited through the moment. The addition of this served as a turning point in the video as he is finally starting to feel a sense of belonging.

0.38 During this point the videographer returns to the personalized headshot of the teen. His facial expressions convey complete shock and disbelief while looking at the wall full of pictures again. This raises the audience to once again think about what the picture could be of.

0.39 A picture of him with the couple and their kids is shown. Additionally, in the picture, they are all holding ice cream cones and wearing the same outfits worn in the ice cream truck scene earlier in the video. The inclusion of that particular picture gives a personalized feeling as that was the first time the viewers finally saw him loosen up. Overall, this part of the video allowed the audience to feel warm and positive feelings.

0.50 The teen is shown hugging the woman with his head resting on her shoulders, thus finally depicting her as a mother figure in his life. On top of that, is a caption that says “Learn about adopting a teen from foster care.” This finally confirms the teens’ position within the family and gives the audience the idea to learn more about adopting a teenager from foster care.
