00:00- the opening scene starts with an African American man who is a young adult. He is in the living room of his house. The man is on his hands and knees in the center of the floor. And rolling up a turquoise colored foam matt. Behind him against the wall of the living room is a sleeping bag that has been rolled up. The window of the living room is in the background of the scene and it looks to be warm and sunny weather, as if it is spring or summer. Out of the man’s mouth he is exhaling smoke as if he was smoking a cigarette or marijuana.
I initially assumed that it was cigarette smoke and prepared for an ad about how smoking is not good for your lungs and can cause cancer. Or since he was a younger man that it was a vaping ad, regarding how you should not vape because it still does damage to your body as is addictive. I believe that it was a vaping ad because mainly younger adults and even teens vape more over older adults and elders. If it was a very old man exhaling smoke I would believe that it was a cigarette. I also do not think it could be marijuana because it is illegal still in many parts of the country, so I don’t think they would be advertising it as much as if it was legal.
00:02- The scene completely switches to another man, who is white. He is zipping up a yellow duffle bag, and also has a camping backpack next to him that has been packed.
00:03- the scene pans to the same man walking down the stairs of his house. I’ve had the yellow duffle bag over his shoulder, and the camping backpack over his other shoulder. He is also carrying a sleeping bag in his hands. As he steps down the stairs he is exhaling smoke.
00:04- the scene switches to an African American woman who is standing in a doorway, and exhaling smoke.
So far the expression on all their faces is relaxed and content.
00:05- The scene pans to the doorway and the man with the yellow duffle bag is standing in the doorway after opening the door for the women. The back of the woman is still in frame, and she is holding her left arm up in the air as if she is making a shrugging gesture.
00:06- The man had a slight smirk on his face and said something as if he was greeting the girl, as if she was a friend of he’s. And he stepped through the doorway and onto the porch where she was standing.
00:07- The next scene is the trunk of a car. The car is quite large, and is an SUV. In the trunk of the car the yellow duffle bag is being placed inside. It was placed on top of other bags, sleeping bags, and a lime green cooler.
00:08- The view planes to the side of the car. With the open trunk still in the frame. The two men are standing side by side, and looking at each other if words are exchanged. They are both carrying two bags and moving toward the trunk of the car. Then place the remaining camping gear inside the trunk.
At this point of the Ad it has only been men, both an African American man and a white man. So far I believe that there is a reason that is only men. That the director of this ad has reasoning by only showing the men doing the packing and loading up the car.
00:09- The scene switches to a new woman with blonde hair. She is standing outside by the SUV which is in the driveway. She is exhaling smoke as she is walking.
Now a women has been included into the scene doing the same thing as the men were. Now I noticing more inclusion in this idea of the smoking it is done by both the men and the women. They all seem very casual about smoking and are going along about their day smoking, so they do not seem very health-conscious or alarmed by what they are doing.
00:10- The scene switches back to the rear of the SUV and one of the men is closing the trunk.
00:11- The camera pans to the side of the silver SUV. And the front passenger door closes and the African American man is sitting in that seat.
00:12- The scene switches to the side of the vehicle. The view is from the dashboard, and is showing all the seats in the car. The African American man is in the front passenger seat. Then the blonde haired woman is sitting behind him in the back seat, the African American woman is in the center seat, and the other man is sitting next to her in the other back seat. The driver’s seat of the vehicle is empty. And the man in the passenger seat is looking at the driver’s seat, as if confused why the seat is still empty.
I also came to a new conclusion that they have chose to smoke because they are going on an outdoor adventure. And now have realized that they are smoking marijuana because no one is attempting to drive because they are high.
00:13- The man in the passenger seat then looks at the row of seats behind him, to notice all of his friends are sitting in the back row, and none of them have sat in the driver’s seat to drive. As he looks back he raises his one arm and makes a pointing gesture with his thumb while looking at the other man in the back seat as his talking with him.
00:14- They all begin to look at each other exchanging words.
00:16- The woman sitting in the middle has a look of concern or worry on her face. As they are all conversing with each other.
00:19- The man in the passenger seat then looks forward again out of the front windshield of the vehicle with a puzzled expression.
00:21- Then the man makes an expression as if he has an idea, with a slight side smirk.
00:23- He then goes into a full smile and looks to let out a small chuckle. Then passengers in the back of the car all seem to have the same idea as him and begin to smirk as well.
00:24- They all begin to unbuckle their seat belts and open the doors of the car.
This was to make it known that they still all buckled their seatbelts safety reasons.
00:25- The camera is now showing the side rear of the SUV. The two men and women with blonde hair are opening the trunk again, and all have smiles on their faces. As the other woman is standing happily beside the vehicle.
00:27- The scene switches to a side view of the vehicle, and the front yard of the house. The four people are in the front lawn. The items that were previously packed in the trunk are now in the yard. A blanket has been placed on the grass, the cooler is open. The African American man is laying on the blanket, and the other three are sitting in fold out chairs. They look to be conversing and happy. Also at the bottom of the scream the logo for “Ad Council’’ appears in the bottom left hand corner and “NHTSA” appears in the bottom right hand corner.
I was surprised at this moment that as they were sitting in the lawn of the house that they did not continue to smoke as they were all sitting together.
00:29- with the same view and the people continuing talking, the words “If you feel different, you drive different” appear across the screen in bold white lettering.
I believe that the purpose of this ad was to get people to not drive while impaired. By saying “if you feel different, you drive differently” is a way to explain to the viewer that you are not capable of driving after smoking. Most people know not to drive drunk, but driving while high is not stressed as much. But it is still just as bad and the driver is impaired. I think by showing no one in the driver’s seat showed that the passengers knew they were under an influence and could not take responsibility for operating the vehicle, so no one sat there. And by getting out of the car they are showing the responsibility of not attempting to drive while high, and potentially facing consequences. By taking their camping gear out of the car while sitting in the lawn, they were still able to enjoy themselves while not putting themselves or others at risk while driving.
Four scenes in four seconds and in every one the main character is exhaling smoke. It’s hard to slow down your reactions long enough to record them, Reeses, but it’s the job. You need to share with your reader what you believe the director was up to by stacking the deck with examples that way. Are all the characters intended to represent a type? Do their differences in gender and ethnicity interfere with that intention? Is there any contradiction between people who might be planning a camping trip or certainly an outdoor adventure and their smoking? Are they athletic? Health-conscious? You see what I’m getting at? Whether we want to or not, we’re noticing details and using them to draw conclusions WHILE WE’RE WATCHING. How do we know this? We feel surprised later on in a story or an ad to see that our EXPECTATIONS were incorrect. We didn’t even notice we HAD expectations until the director USED THEM to teach us a lesson about drawing the wrong conclusions! (Just an example)
Real advice: Don’t neglect the Rhetorical Analysis that is the SECOND HALF of a Visual RHETORIC assignment.
Thank you for the feedback thinking about the second part of the analysis and rewatching I noticed things I was thinking about that I wasn’t before, because I was so focused on the details and not the reason why.
Much better. If you need a few more points to make a grade, consider analyzing the STYLE of the ad. What’s the mood? Does it preach? Does its inclusiveness seem natural or forced? Does it depend on logos, ethos, or pathos to make its point? How WELL does it succeed in delivering its message effectively?
