Is PTSD Contagious?- Swim1903

Article section-19

  1. “It may take years for the verdict to come in on whether secondary trauma will be officially acknowledged as its own unique form of hell. Meanwhile, Hofstra professor Motta says, while “a simple Google search [of the research] would tell you that the children of traumatized people have problems, the VA doesn’t wanna spend the money. Even with veterans, they try to say, ‘Well, you really had a preexisting condition.’ It would cost millions upon millions to treat the people affected. They just don’t want to foot the bill.”
    1. This excerpt from the text is an example of an Evaluative Claim. The author states that it can take years for a decision to be made on secondary trauma. This statement can be arguable on whether or not someone thinks that this is true, so the author quotes a Psychology professor from the University of Hofstra with a Ph.D, who believes that this statement is true. The author includes his statement on the issue to add some credibility to his argument making it an Evaluative claim.
  2. “But she knows how it feels to have your nervous system turn against you, and that it’s harder for veterans to get better if their spouses don’t get treated. Danna’s husband was checking into inpatient psych treatments for almost three weeks at a time, she says, only to come back to his now-crazy wife and “within three seconds” be re-exposed to someone in the emotional state that he was in when he left.”
    1. The author uses a Causal Claim here by stating that veterans can’t get better unless their spouses do. This establishes a cause and effect relationship between the two scenarios where if one spouse has PTSD then so does the other just by relation. The author included this claim to give readers more insight on just how exactly PTSD can be contagious.
  3. “Then again, the VA already is footing some $600 million worth of PTSD treatment for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan** in 2013, via hundreds of medical centers and smaller outpatient clinics, plus 232 vet centers that offer general readjustment services. Caleb alone, just in disability checks, not even including any of his treatment or his numerous prescriptions, will cost the VA $1.7 million if he lives until he’s 80.”
    1. This is an example of a Quantitative, Numerical, or Comparative Claim because the author uses facts and statistics as evidence to support the claim about how much the VA is spending to support veterans with PTSD already. By including these numbers, the reader can gain more insight on why the VA does not want to spend the extra money to support those with secondary PTSD, because they are already spending so much in their eyes.
  4. “She tells me that VVW’s No. 1 priority has always been helping vets figure out how to get their benefits. “Money has to be first. You can’t breathe without it.” But it takes more than that.”
    1. The author explains what exactly Vietnam Veteran Wives (VVW) does for veterans.  Along with helping them get therapy and having a sanctuary where they can go during an episode, VVW also helps veterans learn their benefits which many do not know. By stating this in clear terms, the author is defining what VVW is, therefore making a Definition Claim.
    2. Dana also makes a Proposal Claim when she states that “money has to be first, and that you can’t breathe without it”. By using the words “has to be” she is trying to convince the audience to change their mindset on what is important for these veterans.

The purpose of the assignment was primarily to demonstrate that even small bits of text contain many claims and to give you practice identifying and evaluating them. The section you quote first, about the government’s reluctance to accept PTSD diagnoses, might have two dozen claims in it.

    4 is your best example.

This will pass, and it’s probably not worth your time to revise it when you have other more pressing assignments to complete, but if you do want advice or a sample of how to proceed, you are welcome to rewrite this post and submit it for a regrade, Swim.
