1. Banerji, Rita, India femicide: Where girl infants face ‘pre-meditated’ murder, 2012, Women’s News Network, http://womennewsnetwork.net/2012/02/07/india-girl-infants-murder-femicide/
Background- Indian families are creative when it comes to killing off their female children. They purposely infect the children with diseases, starve them, and let them starve to death. For every 56 boys that die,100 more girls die.
How I plan to use it- This article contains great statistics about the mortality rate of girls compared to boys. I want to use these statistics in my essay. I also want to talk about the various killing methods that are used to get rid of the girls. These methods are long, slow, and tortuous.
2. Ali, Saleha, “The Truth About India’s ‘Gendercide’”, November 1, 2013. Spiked.com http://www.spiked-online.com/newsite/article/the_truth_about_indias_gendercide/14232#.U1lWgSraKR9
Background- Following the gang raping of a student in New Delhi activist worldwide are fighting for women’s civil right. India was voted the number one worst place to be a women placing above Saudi Arabia. The killing of women is raising concerns all over the country because of the skewed sex ratios.
How I plan to use it- This is a great article that discusses the lack of rights that Indian women face. Also, again we see the reoccurring theme of sex selective abortions and the killing of new born girls. The uneven ratio between men and women has created a world that is literally hell. Women belong to more than one husband and are forced to suffer.

Background- Last year a young women was ganged raped on a bus in New Delhi. She sustained massive injuries and eventually succumbed to them leading to her death.
How I plan to use it- I want to use this as an example of what happens on a daily basis in India. Most of these stories don’t make it to the headlines. There is also a quote in here from a law school graduate that I feel would make an excellent edition to my argument.
4. “Petition To Stop Female Genocide/ Femicide/ Gendercide in India”, 2006 http://genderbytes.wordpress.com/petition/petition-to-stop-female-genocide-femicide-gendercide-in-india/
Background- Currently to this date it is estimated that more than fifty million women are missing from India today. Whether from feticide, infanticide, or femicide, the amount of women missing is staggering.
How I plan to use it- This is a great source to use for my rebuttal. People from all over the world are petitioning for the rights of women to not merely live as equals among men but just to have the right to survive and live their lives without fear.
5. Patel, Vibhuti, “Sex-determination and Sex Preselection In India: Recent Techniques In Femicide”,1982,Reproductive and Genetic Engineering: Journal of International Feminist Analysis.http://www.finrrage.org/pdf_files/RepTech%20General/Sex_Determination_and_Femicide_in_India.pdf
Background- Sex selective abortions are popular among all types of Indian families. Despite religion, or class every family is seeking to produce male children. Women are targeted from the moment they are born. If they do not die in the womb they will most likely die in their young adolescence.
How I plan to use it- This article provides some very good statistics. From abortions to dowry related deaths I plan to use statistics to support my thesis. We may not fully comprehend what women go through, but number do not lie. Women are dying in large sums and their rights are nearly non existent.
6. Ahmad N., “Female feticide in India”, summer 2010, Issues Pub Med, Pubmed.gov
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20879612
Background- In the 1990’s India made it illegal to have sex selective abortions. Each year it is estimated that nearly one million female fetuses are aborted. Although there are strict laws in place to prevent abortions from occurring, the practice still takes place.
How I plan to use it- I would like to incorporate in my essay how the legal system does not scare India’s residents. They continue to abort female fetuses with no regard for the law. The preference for boys is so strongly apart of their culture they do not fear harsh punishment for their injustices.
7. Team Halabol, “Why We Won’t Stop Buying Brides” May 9, 2012, Halabol Voices
http://voices.halabol.com/2012/05/09/why-we-wont-stop-buying-brides
Background- Sexual frustration and desperation has led to ‘bride buying’ in India. Human trafficking has become a lucrative business and is seen a vital service. Despite the lack of women, families still continue to abort and or kill their girl infants immediately after birth. Women are viewed as nothing more than “baby producing sexual commodities”.
How I plan to use it- The belief that women are only worth their ability to produce sons is apart their culture. I would like to talk about how women don’t receive respect and are only worth their child bearing abilities.
8. Natalia Antelava, “The girls stolen from the streets of India” January 8, 2013. BBCNews.com http://m.bbc.com/news/magazine-20938125
Background- Again, we see a reoccurring theme of sex ratios being uneven. Villagers have begun to partake in black market activities such as kidnapping. A14 year old girl was kidnapped and beaten and raped by her “husband”. This sort of incident is becoming more current in India. Every household feels the pressure to find wives for their sons and what better way then to kidnap and buy them.
How I plan to use it- I would like to discuss how the lack of women is not changing the mindset of these people. Instead of producing more women they would rather steal young girls. Not only are these girls young (12-14) but they are raped, beaten, and forced into marriages. The patriarchal system of India is so engrained into the culture that many people have turned to vein as means to an end.
9. Alan B. Goldberg, Sean Dooley, “Disappearing Daughters: Women Pregnant With Girls Pressured Into Abortion” Dec 9, 2011. Abcnews.com http://abcnews.go.com/Health/women-pregnant-girls-pressured-abortions-india/story?id=15103950#.TuJBhnN91Gh
Background- It is certainly ironic that a country that worships female deities can commit gendercide; with men outnumbering women by nearly 40 million. The main cause for femicide is money. A women is seen as an expensive burden and their families must pay large dowries to marry their daughters off.
How I plan to use it- I would like to use this article to further my thesis as to why women are being killed. The main concern for families is money. According to the author, A. Goldberg, “Girls are a financial burden to their parents, who must pay expensive dowries to marry them off. The dowry is a cultural tradition and the single biggest reason Indians prefer boys.”
10. Nandgaon, Haryan, “Haryana’s Lonely bachelors” March 4, 2010. The Economist.com Ahttp://www.economist.com/node/15604465
Background- Due to the uneven sex ratios men are having to import wives from other regions of the country. The shortage of women is causing the villagers to trade women instead of accepting large dowries per wife.
How I plan to use it- I plan on using this as counterargument to my own thesis. The article is discussing a situation of a reverse dowry. The sex ratio is so skewed that it is placing power back into the women’s hands.
Disappointed not to see the material on sexual pre-selection used in your research argument. You also could have been VERY persuasive by citing some of the methods used to dispose of unwanted female children. Yikes.
Graded.
