Reflective — Benjamin Balesteri

Scratching The Surface

Core Value 1. College level writing was a struggle for me at first. However, through perseverance, I found that writing requires time for information gathering, development, organization, expression, and reflection. In college composition II, my professor encouraged feedback with everything in his power.  Due to this enthusiastic motivation, I received feedback not only from my professor but from my peers. Receiving feedback not only allows me to see the mistakes that slipped by me, but learn how to fix them in a scholarly manner. At times this semester, my essays suffered from grammar failure. Due to the ability of self-directed revision, I was able to spot, alter, and ultimately fix the essays for a passing grade.

Core Value 3. Understanding one’s ability to read text and interpret its meaning is a key aspect to college level writing. Most of the time, authors will write an article of literature and have an underlying meaning. Therefore, most of the time students will misinterpret the reading and begin to write an essay that does not justify what the author intended. Realizing this, interpreting literature has become one of the most important tendencies I have when writing a paper. In many essays this year, especially the critical reading, I have spent time and effort to make sure I fully understand an article of writing before writing an essay about it. Literature is a beautiful thing with endless possibilities. I have only begun to scratch the surface of this beautiful world but I am dedicated to bettering myself in reading and writing.

Core Value 5.  Humans do not know everything. Considering this, information was sought after time after time throughout college composition II. Being a quality writer means one must understand the differences between quality information and false accusations. College level writing asks students to broaden their academic horizons and adopt theories of the experts on various subjects. Lastly, interpreting the information gathered from various sources into my life has been a challenge I have learned to conquer under the supervision of my professor. Relating information to my own experiences makes writing an enjoyable and easier process. The world’s information would plateau if people didn’t research information other people have already found.

Core Value 7The importance of power and ethical responsibility is portrayed through research and critical thinking at the college level. I, as a writer, have learned how to construct ethically sound arguments that display mature and developed ideas. In college composition II, I wrote many essays that demanded research to complete. In this research, it is vital to understand the difference between credible and non-credibe sources. The findings in this research prove in my essays that I am able to develop a mature analysis and have gained the ability to evaluate complex subject material. With these writing tools at my side, I feel as if I can create college level writing for the rest of my life. The past semester under my professor’s supervision has proven to not only better my writing styles, but also help me grow as a mature human being that takes credibility seriously.

I’m not sure anything we’ve written would qualify as literature, but I’m glad you’re motivated to find some, Ben.
