Are Multivitamins Really Good For Me?

This article describes what multivitamins affect in the body and what they actually help when consumed. It says they are good for people with vitamin deficient diets but if a person has a decent diet, then multivitamins could harm many different organs. It also describes how there are different vitamins for people in different age groups and genders. There are usually ten different vitamins and minerals in each multivitamin and each vitamin can affect the body in positive and negative ways.

How I Intend to Use It: I plan on using the information in this article in the beginning of my essay because it briefly describes the history of multivitamins and also why they can be mad. This article states and proves my point that to much of a vitamin can be detrimental to different organs because people already get enough of the recommended daily amount through food and too much of a vitamin can take a toll on the body when being processed.

Does Taking Vitamins Affect Your Liver?

This article goes in depth about the affects of taking to many vitamins. It shows how your liver can be severely damaged and how vitamins can be toxic in excess amounts. It lists multiple vitamins that can harm the body and the reasons why this vitamin should be taken at all. At the end of the article, it states that people get most of the vitamins they need from food itself and do not need vitamins to be healthy.

How I Intend to Use It: I will use this article to show the affects on the liver that vitamins can cause. Some vitamins can do as much damage as alcohol if the body doesn’t need them. This article further proves my point that multivitamins may not be that beneficial and people can get most of what they need just from food.

The Problem With Taking too Many Vitamins

This article starts off by giving a gruesome example of people who had to much vitamin A in their system. It says their skin started to peel off and they lost almost half of their body weight. It then describes why to much of a vitamin can be harmful. The article takes examples of what scientists wrote in systemic review papers which said people should undergo medical evaluations before taking multivitamins.

How I Intend to Use It: I will use this article by giving the actual example of what happened to people who had to much of a vitamin. I also liked how this article not only stated to much a vitamin can be harmful but that different types of vitamins compete for absorption which means people could actually not be getting enough of a supplement by taking a multivitamin.

Multivitamins are a Waste of Money, Doctors say

This article provides views from scientists and doctors that say multivitamins are a waste of money. This article gets specific saying scientists “found no evidence that taking daily multivitamin and mineral supplements prevents or slows down the progress of cognitive decline or chronic diseases such as heart diseases or cancer.” This article gives information on how much the industry is worth and that is the reason why the industry keeps spewing false facts about how multivitamins can help you.

How I Intent to Use It: I will use this article by giving quotes from scientists and doctors that state multivitamins do not prevent heart disease or cancer. There have been multiple studies done to see if the multivitamins help, but they all come out negative. The supplement industry is worth 28 billion dollars which is the reason why companies will falsely claim that their products can save peoples lives. I will also use the information that supports my thesis that people can get all of recommended vitamins from just eating food.

Do You Really Need All Those Vitamins

In this article it refers to a study that was printed in the Archives of Internal Medicine that proved commonly used multivitamins and minerals were linked to higher mortality rates. It also lists the specific vitamins that were found to cause these rates when taken in excess. It explains why vitamins are absorbed to the body in a healthy way when eaten in food opposed to taken in pill form.

How I Intend to Use It: I will use the study that they explained to further support my thesis. This article actually uses scientific evidence that I can use to show that eating food is better than taking pills to get the same nutrients. I will also incorporate the food plan they give at the end of the article to show how a person can get all of the vitamins they need to stay healthy.

Two Knew Studies Debunk Benefits of Multivitamins

This article gives proof that there are no benefits of taking multivitamins. It even says that junk foods are loaded with vitamins but are just very high in calories and fat. What is also very helpful about this article is that they list common questions that people ask and give scientific answers to them.

How I Intend to Use It: I will use this article in my paper for citing many quotes. There are multiple quotes by doctors that give evidence as to why there are know benefits to multivitamins. I will also use the fact that junk food is loaded with vitamins but there are a lot of calories and fat. This eliminates the rebuttal that people could have to my argument that they only eat junk food which is why they need a multivitamin.

Getting to Much of Vitamins and Minerals

This article gives a lot of information on folic acid and why too much of it can be detrimental to a person health. It gives more stats than any of the other articles which is very helpful. It states that most people already get enough folic acid as it is and more than the recommended amount can be linked to different types of cancers.

How I Intend to Use It: I will use the stats that are given in this article to further prove my point that multivitamins are not healthy to consume. I will also use the information on folic acid to give some actual effects of multivitamins on the body. The article also states how getting to much calcium can also be unhealthy and lead to birth defects if a person is continuously getting to much of it.

Multivitamin Researchers Say “Case is Closed” after Studies Find no Health Benefits.

This article shows that three new recent studies have been performed on multivitamins that prove there are no benefits. The doctors gave a quote saying that there is no substitute for a well balanced diet. The doctors also say that the multivitamins should not be used for chronic disease prevention.

How I Intend to Use It: I am going to cite the doctors from this article in my paper. The three studies help prove my thesis that multivitamins are bad and that there is no substitute for a healthy diet. It also comes form CBS news which is a reliable source. I also like how the article states that the multivitamin companies and industry lie to people and assume that people know the facts about the supplements.

Multiple Vitamin Overdose

This article defines what a vitamin overdose is and what the different symptoms are. It gives information on the different types of symptoms people have and what body parts are affected. Some of the symptoms people can have can be very subtle which is why many people do not contact 911 and as a result die. The symptoms range from cracking lips to kidney failure and this article even tells people what to do if they think they have any of the symptoms.

How I Intend to Use It: I am going to use this article to show the different effects of what taking to many multivitamins can do to people. I will be able to demonstrate what the symptoms are and the results of not doing anything about them. There is also some information on what some specific vitamins do to people which will be very helpful.

Can You Overdose on Multivitamins

This article gives statistic on how many people in the United States take multivitamins and also what a vitamin overdose is. It gives good information on different Nutrients of Concern, Overdose Symptoms, Treatments, and Considerations. I like how in this article it talks a lot about what to much iron in a person’s system can do. It also says that people are more likely to overdose on certain nutrients and vitamins than others.

How I Intend to Use It: I am going to use this article to talk about what iron can do to a person. The symptoms can last for up to a week and it also tells people what to do if they think they have a vitamin overdose. I like how this article also talks about how fat soluble vitamins are different from other types of vitamins. Fat soluble vitamins can build up to toxic amounts over a long period of time which will be helpful when writing about different types of vitamins.
