Trans-Canada Pipeline Disaster
- The video starts off with a group of people sitting at a table talking about the Trans-Canada pipeline. One man at the table starts off the commercial saying that he hears that the oil is going to China which is followed by a sound of crickets and silence at the table. Another man then responds saying that we are shipping oil out of the country to make money and then importing more oil. This makes the listener wonder why the U.S. would do this. A third man then asks how this helps the United States.
- When the second man starts talking again, the video cuts to a news clip mid sentence and calls the pipeline a “Environmental Disaster.” The video then cuts to other news clips that show the pipeline and an explosion showing the harm that is being done to the environment.
- The video cuts to the people at the table again and a man says “Building a pipeline will inject…” before being cut to another new clip that finishes his sentence saying “3.1 million gallon of hazardous liquids per year into the environment.” The video uses news clips and images to convey to the listener how environmentally unfriendly the pipeline is.
- Fifty seconds into the video, there is a news clip of an Arkansas town that has oil spilled in streams, streets, and front yards. These images are promptly followed by the people sitting at the table and a man asking why so many people are opposed to the pipeline. A map of the United States is then shown and it maps out where the pipeline crosses. It goes directly over the largest source of fresh water in the country. After showing the map there are more news clips that show that there are safety issues and inadequate inspections.
- The people at the table are shown again saying the U.S. made it strictly for profit and that its the way the country does its business. Another news anchor then states people are being forced from their homes because of the spills, the damages, and the fumes that are destroying towns.
- Videos of the town in Arkansas are shown to help convey to the listener what is happening and how harmful the pipeline can be. There are videos of oil pouring out of peoples driveways and down the streets in suburban neighborhoods. Another news anchor then says the Trans-Canada pipeline spilled over 12 times in its first year of operation.
- The video finishes up with images of oil covered animals and a video of a government representative that says “all we have to do is pay more, in terms of money at the gas pump, and the cost to the environment.”
- This video got the point across perfectly to the viewer that the Trans-Canada pipeline is harmful to the environment. It uses satire to make fun of the people talking at the table about why the pipeline is a good idea. Everything the people say at the table is counteracted by the news clips and videos of the damage that has already been done to the environment.
