Definition Essay—Casmir Reihing

 Femicide The Necessary Evil

In a world dominated by men there is no place for women. Due to the patriarchal system of India, women are subjected to abuse and neglect. Furthermore, femicide, the purpose elimination of women solely due to their gender. Although femicide may seem as a nefarious act, it is a necessary evil.

In India it is far better to be born a male than a female. The moment it is discovered a child is a female, is the moment that the hate crimes begin. These hate crimes are consistent with femicide. “A girl child  in India, who is between the ages 1 to 5-years-old, is 75 percent more likely to die than a boy in the same age category”-Rita Banerji. These killing methods include starvation, physical abuse, burying the child alive, and suffocation. These acts may be viewed as inhumane and cruel but in the long run those infant girls are being saved from a life full of abuse.

Last year in December a sixteen year old student was gang raped on a moving bus in New Delhi. She sustained massive internal bleeding that led to her death two weeks later. This sort of incident take place everyday in India, but of course it doesn’t make national headlines. “Every girl at any age experiences this — harassment or rape. We don’t feel safe,” said law school graduate Rapia Pathania. By committing femicide, those 1.8 million girls who are missing from India today are spared from this sort of abuse.

What an amazing first paragraph, Casmir. You may not be able to maintain this level of categorical certainty, but you surely start strong.

What do you suggest for the next two paragraphs so that they can be equally as strong?

You’ve taken your position to the far extreme, Casmir, an excellent place to begin. You can’t stay here without appearing very callous, which I know you’re not. The tricky part will be finding the phrases that express full compassion for the poor unfortunates born to a high chance of abuse without wishing them dead.

An example of too-extreme is this: These acts may seem inhumane and cruel but in the long run those infant girls are being saved from a life full of abuse.

It’s the “seem” that makes you complicit in the abuse. These acts are categorically inhumane and your suggestion that they might not be gets you in trouble. I understand you mean that, like a mercy killing, they release a child from future suffering, but you and I cannot possibly know enough about the world these girls inhabit to be as judgmental as we’d like.

So be careful. And fix the grammar. And format your Works Cited. Let me know when you’ve made enough revisions to be ready for more feedback.
