Invention of Money- Saarah Prodani

The story of the Yap was a big eye opener for me. When I first listened to the story in class I couldn’t believe how ridiculous the concept of their money was. But once discussing the the exchange of money for gold between the US and France I realized how similar the two systems are. We look at their money as less valuable because its stone. But why is paper and medal more legitimate? Its not, we think it is because our government tells us thats what money is. Just like the Yap trust each others claims of giant fei at the bottom of the ocean, we trust our banks that pieces of paper proves that we own certain properties. Its all the same in the end, a community agrees on a system of buying and trading and honors it.

    Your ideas here are all reasonable and acceptable, Saarah. The grammar and punctuation of your explanations is not. Your paragraph would fail for grammar repeatedly if it appeared in your portfolio (so don’t let simple grammar errors appear in your portfolio!). You have a particular problem with apostrophes: you don’t use them. Five are missing here. Your subjects and verbs don’t always agree in number either. If you can find the problems and fix them, please do. If you need to meet with a tutor at the Writing Center, I suggest you do so this week to establish a relationship with one before Finals Week. They’re very helpful and generous, but they don’t like to be used for emergencies only.

    This first installment of the Invention of Money post was supposed to be (and yours is) a personal reflection on the experience of reading about the Yap and their fei. Your rewrite, which you will post as Money Rewrite in its own category, needs to be a complete and more formal essay on the subjects of money and currency. In it, you’ll need to refer to the other readings and media on this topic. You’ll reference and cite at least two additional sources: the Japanese yen inflation, the Brazilian real, or the Bitcoin reading.

    No grade is earned for this post, Saarah. It was preliminary work for which nobody received a grade. The graded version, Money Rewrite, has its own requirements and its own category, A04: Money Rewrite.
