New Controversy Over Organ Donation System

“On attempt to increase organ donations and save lives a string of a big controversy, Cynthia Newsum is here with details on why some people are so concerned.” 0:00-0:09

  • This claims that “some people” are concerned with the attempt to increase organ donations but does not tell the audience who these people are.
  • The listener is also not told who is trying to increase these organ donations, are hospitals, jails, or regular people?

“Well the numbers are heart wrenching, 18 people a day nation wide die waiting for an organ. There is a plan that could save some of those lives, many wonder if it’s the right thing to do.”  0:09-0:20

  • This makes a claim that 18 deaths a day due to failure to receive an organ transplant is heartbreaking and something one should pity.
  • It also makes a claim that this problem can be fixed and that there is a way to solve the death issue.
  • Lastly, the last sentence makes a claim that there is speculation about whether the plan to save these people is the right thing to do, the listener is not told who these “many” speculators are and also does not give us any advice of what the “right thing to do” is, if it is not to help these 18 people who die every day.

“A lunch-break walk is when friends and coworker Cindy Magisty and Monique Snead talk about their triumphs and their troubles.”  0:20-0:27

  • This sentences makes a claim that Monique and Sidney have triumphs and troubles on a  daily basis, and that their troubles have become every day and casual experiences.

“Needless to say, Monique is a registered organ donor. Cindy is too.” 0:35-0:37

  • This short sentence makes a claim by saying “needless t say,” as if because Monique’s mother needs an organ she automatically and obviously would be an organ donor.

“And when I’m gone I don’t necessarily need organs, my family doesn’t need the organs, uhm, if it could help save a life…” 0:37- 0:44

  • Cindy claims that once she is death she no longer needs the organs so if by giving her organs up after death she could save somebody else’s life than there is nothing wrong with it.
  • Cindy also makes a claim that before anyone else needs the organs, she has a distinct order for their use: herself, her family, and than everybody else– claiming that she would only give up her organs to outsiders if none of her family needed them first.\

“It’s their choice, but in a USA Today article, a suburban new yorker assemblyman wants to take the choice out of organ donation. Richard Broadsky’s ten-year old daughter, Julianne, has had two kidney transplants. Broadsky is advocated presumed consent: people would automatically be an organ donor unless they opt out.” 0:45- 1:04

  • The newswoman states that the assembly men wants to take the choice out of organ donation as if people’s rights are being taken against them.
  • The sentence about Richard’s daughter is entirely there to show his compassion and awareness of what it is like to be waiting for his daughter to get the organ she needs and claims that she is ten years old and already has had to two two surgeries
  • The last sentence claims that people are assumed to wanting to be an organ donor and have to check a box if they do not, rather than if they do.

“Even with her mothers life hanging in the balance waiting for a transplant, Monique agrees… choosing to wait, until someone else chooses to help.” 1:23- 1:28 & 1:39- 1:42

  • This news reporter makes very strong claims against Monique, stating that even though her own mother could die she still does not want to give up her own organ.
  • She also says that Monique is “choosing to wait, until someone else chooses to help” because by Monique not giving her mother her organ she is not helping her mother, but hurting her even more.

Bold claims, not all justified on the basis of the actual material.
