Riddle: Shaking Hands Gravestones

What possible explanation could there be for two people to be buried in this manner?

What should I call you? I prefer David or Dave, but students uncomfortable with first names can call me Professor or Mister Hodges. My ESL students' charming solution, "Mister David" is my favorite by far.

    My guess is that for some reason, they shouldn’t be together but wish they were. So when they died they wanted to be buried like this so that they can be connected in the afterlife.
